  • Due to extended wait periods, the State Department strongly recommends that travelers who want to go abroad this summer submit their passport renewal applications as soon as possible.

According to the State Department, the standard processing time for a passport is presently between eight and 11 weeks, while the expedited processing time is between five and seven weeks and costs an additional sixty dollars. The State Department issued a warning that the estimates only reflect the time it takes to complete the request and do not take into account the time it takes to send the request, driving directions which may add several additional weeks.
The United States Department of State tweeted on Friday about the extended processing timeframes, advising citizens to “Apply now if you intend to travel this summer.”

The current wait time is greater than it was earlier this month, when expedited passport renewals took three to five weeks and standard renewals took six to nine weeks, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. At that time, the wait period for routine renewals was six to nine weeks.

The WSJ reports that processing times may change throughout the year and rise depending on demand; this is especially true during the busier travel seasons of spring and summer.

Tourists who wish to apply for a passport must do so via mail. According to the State Department, the online renewal option, which had been made available as part of a test program the previous year, was put on indefinite hold on February 7. When it resumes operations, travelers who meet the following requirements will be eligible to participate in that program: they must be at least 25 years old; their most recent passport must have been valid for 10 years; and their previous passport must have been issued between nine and 15 years ago. At this time, travelers who renew their tickets online are unable to make changes to their personal information such as their name, gender, date of birth, or place of birth.

Although while processing times are now longer than they were in the past, they are still nothing near as long as the backlog that the State Department had in 2021, when it took up to 18 weeks to complete passport applications and in-person appointments were almost impossible to schedule.

After that, the State Department made the decision to recognize expired passports for American citizens who were already traveling outside the country. But, they will no longer honor expired passports beginning in July of 2022.
