AT&T; Telework Program Receives Keep Georgia Beautiful Award

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, Mar. 8 -/E-Wire/-- Working at home instead of the office â€" whether it’s once a month, once a week or even more often â€" produces real benefits for companies, the community and the environment.

To see how big the environmental benefits can be, look at AT&T;’s experience in Atlanta. Since 1992, Atlanta-area employees in AT&T;’s telework program have:

* Avoided driving 10 million miles to their offices.

* Saved 500,000 gallons of gasoline.

* Kept 4,700 tons of carbon dioxide out of Atlanta’s air.

That environmental contribution has earned AT&T; the Keep Georgia Beautiful Award for its commitment to telework. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs presented the award today to Clair Krizov, AT&T; Executive Director for Environment and Social Responsibility.

Some 66 percent of AT&T; managers in Atlanta telework at least once a month. And 37 percent telework once a week or more.

“Telework provides a practical way to reduce pollution, and it also has real benefits to our business,â€쳌 Krizov says.

“AT&T;’s years of experience have demonstrated that telework reduces our real estate expenses, increases productivity, boosts employee retention and helps employees balance family and work. Everybody wins â€" the company, the employee and the community.â€쳌

In Atlanta, the 1996 Olympics sparked a dramatic rise in telework participation at AT&T.; But in the years since, participation has remained high.

Krizov says one reason why is that telework follows the "law of increasing returns." AT&T;’s research shows that each new teleworker receives more benefit than the one before. Successful and sustainable telework programs require a critical mass of workers so that communication and management patterns adapt to the new, virtual organization.

“Telework is a great idea for many jobs and many employees, but it’s not a program that can be applied to every situation,â€쳌 Krizov says. In addition, telework requires both an understanding of technology and a new way of thinking about management and balancing work and family life.

To help other companies work through these issues, AT&T; has developed the AT&T; Telework Webguide (http://www.att.com/telework/). The online guide contains information on a variety of telework issues, including technology, management and work environments.
