FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
University of California, Berkeley Awarded An AT&T; Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellowship
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, Mar. 20 -/E-Wire/-- AT&T; selected researchers from six leading universities, including the University of California, Berkeley, to receive an AT&T; Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellowship. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley received a $25,000 renewal grant to support their project, "Case Studies of Telework's Environmental Implications."
Industrial Ecology is a multidisciplinary field that studies industrial and economic systems and their linkage with natural systems. It also intersects with disciplines such as law, economics, anthropology, business studies, engineering, and the social and physical sciences. Other recipients of this yearââ¬â¢s faculty fellowship include Carnegie Mellon University, University of California, Irvine, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, University of Michigan, and University of Missouri-Rolla.
"We are grateful for this fellowship from AT&T; as it continues to recognize our efforts to study the environmental implications of telework," said Dr. Arpad Horvath, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of California, Berkeley. "More broadly, this fellowship gives us the motivation to study other scenarios for environmentally beneficial substitution of services for products."
The university's initial Industrial Ecology proposal, which was selected for grant funding in 2000, and the subsequent research focused on developing a system-wide environmental model of telework's energy consumption and air pollution implications by quantifying the effects of transportation, office, and home electronic equipment use, as well as lighting, heating, and cooling. Using this model, the net environmental benefits (or costs) are estimated based on the environmental impacts associated with both non-teleworkers and teleworkers. Dr. Horvath and his team propose to extend their research and to apply the tool to a number of case studies. The most important goal is the analysis of case studies with companies, public/governmental organizations, and national and regional data sources in order to determine the environmentally sustainable scenarios for telework.
ââ¬ÅThe University of California, Berkeley project represents an important avenue of research not just in itself, but in helping us to learn how to look at the environmental benefits and costs of services generally,ââ¬ì³ said Brad Allenby, AT&T; Environment, Health & Safety Vice President.
The AT&T; Foundation established the Industrial Ecology Grants Program in 1993 to encourage academic activity in this field. Since then, the program has awarded faculty research fellowships, supported the Colloquium on Industrial Ecology at the National Academy of Sciences, supported two conferences on research in the field, and helped launch the Journal of Industrial Ecology. This program is consistent with AT&T;ââ¬â¢s environmental social responsibility and its support of environmental initiatives and organizations.
The AT&T; Foundation invests in projects that address a range of public concerns. Emphasis is placed on programs that serve the needs of people in communities where AT&T; has a significant business presence; initiatives that use technology in innovative ways; and programs that AT&T; employees are actively involved with as contributors and/or volunteers.
