FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
University of Michigan Awarded an AT&T; Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellowship
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, Mar. 26 -/E-Wire/-- AT&T; selected researchers from six leading universities, including the University of Michigan, to receive an AT&T; Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellowship. Researchers at the University of Michigan received a $25,000 renewal grant to support their project, "Life Cycle Assessment of E- Publishing and Digital Libraries: Scholarly Books and E-Book Reading Devices."
Industrial Ecology is a multidisciplinary field that studies industrial and economic systems and their linkage with natural systems. It also intersects with disciplines such as law, economics, anthropology, business studies, engineering, and the social and physical sciences. Other recipients of this yearââ¬â¢s faculty fellowship include Carnegie Mellon University, University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Irvine, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and University of Missouri-Rolla.
"The AT&T; Foundation has played a vital role in the development and growth of the field of industrial ecology," said Dr. Gregory A. Keoleian, Co-Director, Center for Sustainable Systems and Associate Research Scientist, Industrial Ecology at the School of Natural Resources and Environment, University of Michigan. "Industrial Ecology provides tremendous insights that can enhance the design and application of information technology. We are very excited about the opportunity to continue our life cycle modeling of digital libraries through our fellowship."
The University of Michigan Digital Library Initiative has been at the forefront of promoting the use of electronically published books and journals. The university's initial Industrial Ecology proposal in 2000, also funded by AT&T;, focused on life cycle modeling of the production, delivery, access, and storage of journal articles in digital and print formats. This renewal proposal addresses the environmental performance of scholarly electronic books and e-book reading devices, which builds upon model elements from year one. This research effort will be conducted in conjunction with the History E-Book Project, which includes the University of Michigan Press and Digital Library Program as well as nine other university presses. The interdisciplinary team will develop specific recommendations for enhancing the design and application of e-book information technology.
ââ¬ÅThe University of Michigan research will provide us with important specific information not only on environmental benefits and costs of electronic publishing, but more generally on the promise of the digital revolution for environmental improvement,ââ¬ì³ said Brad Allenby, AT&T; Environment, Health & Safety Vice President.
The AT&T; Foundation established the Industrial Ecology Grants Program in 1993 to encourage academic activity in this field. Since then, the program has awarded faculty research fellowships, supported the Colloquium on Industrial Ecology at the National Academy of Sciences, supported two conferences on research in the field, and helped launch the Journal of Industrial Ecology. This program is consistent with AT&T;ââ¬â¢s environmental social responsibility and its support of environmental initiatives and organizations.
The AT&T; Foundation invests in projects that address a range of public concerns. Emphasis is placed on programs that serve the needs of people in communities where AT&T; has a significant business presence; initiatives that use technology in innovative ways; and programs that AT&T; employees are actively involved with as contributors and/or volunteers.
