PBS FRONTLINE Airs Segment on Beef Industry
Coleman Natural Products -- the First Natural Beef Sold to Consumers
COLORADO, DENVER, Apr. 19 -/E-Wire/Business Wire/-- Folks at Coleman Natural Products watched last night's PBS FRONTLINE story ("Modern Meat") on the U.S. meat industry with interest.
One of the largest suppliers of natural beef in the United States, Coleman pioneered the marketing of natural beef in 1979 and is the first company to receive the USDA's certified "natural" label for beef.
Peter Pappas, president of Coleman, stated: "We are disappointed that the FRONTLINE piece didn't tell the whole story about beef production in the United States. Here at Coleman we are proud of the innovative practices that have been adopted by the industry. We believe that beef is part of a healthy, well-balanced diet and hope that consumers will not be discouraged from eating it."
Jack Martin, Ph.D. and owner of Sterling Nutritional Services in Colorado, said, "Coleman is the benchmark that the other natural beef suppliers are trying to meet." Martin is a leading expert in livestock nutrition.
FRONTLINE's "Modern Meat" discussed a number of issues, including:
-- Unprecedented beef production levels;
-- Feedlot practices;
-- Food safety issues such as E. Coli and Salmonella; and
-- USDA regulations regarding inspection and HACCP requirements.
Cattle in the Coleman Natural Beef program are processed under a protocol with strict standards at every stage of production. Every Coleman product -- from the ground beef to the rib-eye steak -- is the result of strictly audited quality assurance procedures. Coleman has an audit trail consisting of pre-approved supplier forms, "Rancher Affidavits," "Shipper Affidavits," and "Feeder Affidavits." In addition, Coleman has procedures in place, which outline animal wellness and feed guidelines as well as humane animal handling practices.
Dr. Temple Grandin, assistant professor of animal science at Colorado State University, is an expert on cattle welfare. Dr. Grandin, who has worked with Coleman in establishing animal welfare audit procedures, said, "Coleman is the pioneer when it comes to selling natural beef."
Jack Gridley, Meat and Seafood Director for Dorothy Lane Market in Dayton, Ohio, and a Coleman Beef retailer, said: "I trust Coleman meats because I have seen the whole process of how cattle are raised and treated. Coleman has my confidence because their beef is raised the right way."
Coleman Natural Products, Inc. is a privately held company headquartered in Denver. Over the years, Coleman Natural Products has been recognized for its natural standards by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and was awarded for excellent taste by the Chefs of America and Monde Selection, a prestigious European culinary group.
