ACIL Releases Two Position Papers on Product Certification
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, WASHINGTON, Apr. 24 -/E-Wire/-- The American Council of Independent Laboratories (ACIL) today released two position papers on product certification, a procedure that assures the public that products entering the marketplace meet specific health and safety requirements.
Although ACIL believes that third party certification of a product provides the greatest value to the consumer, it recognizes the increased use of the emerging supplier's Declaration of Conformity (sDoC), a procedure by which a supplier gives written assurance that a product, process or service conforms to specified requirements. While there are inherent difficulties with a system of this type, ACIL believes that an appropriately designed system can be an effective method of assuring the public that products meet minimum technical requirements for market entry.
The first paper, The ACIL sDoC Position Paper, outlines the requirements that must be met before this form of conformity assessment would be appropriate as a means of protecting the health, safety, and environment of the public and before it could become a credible method of product conformity.
The second paper, The Value of Third Party Certification, describes in detail why this type of product certification is more in keeping with the needs of both society and the manufacturing community. The independence, cost effectiveness and reliability of third party certification are readily accepted in the marketplace as a benchmark for health and safety standards.
These papers are freely available from the ACIL Web site: http://www.acil.org/publications/positionpapers.html .
Founded in 1937, ACIL is the trade association representing independent, commercial scientific and engineering firms. Its members are professional services firms engaged in testing, product certification, consulting, and research and development. Affiliated membership is available to manufacturers' laboratories, consultants, and suppliers to the industry and related trade associations.
