FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sunoco Issues 2001 Health, Environment and Safety Report
PENNSYLVANIA, PHILADELPHIA, May. 3 -/E-Wire/-- Sunoco, Inc. said today that it has issued its 2001 Health, Environment and Safety (HES) Report marking this as the tenth successive year that the company has provided the results of its performance directly to the public. In February 1993, Sunoco became the first Fortune 500 company to endorse the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES) Principles and reinforce its long-standing commitment to safe, reliable and environmentally sound operations. Sunoco believes that excellent performance in health, environment and safety goes hand-in-hand with operations excellence and financial strength. All employees have ownership for improved results in each of these areas.
CERES, a unique partnership between some of America's largest institutional investors and environmental groups, is a worldwide leader in standardized corporate environmental reporting and has pioneered an innovative approach toward encouraging greater corporate responsibility on environmental issues. Over the last decade, a number of other major corporations have joined with Sunoco through their endorsement of the CERES Principles.
As detailed in the 1999 CERES Five-Year Review of Sunoco, Inc., CERES has been a valued partner with Sunoco in the company's ongoing efforts to continually "raise the bar" on its HES performance and improved public accountability. The relationship with CERES also has the added benefit of providing Sunoco with access to a diverse network of stakeholders for a candid exchange of views.
The detailed version of the report can be found on Sunoco's web site - www.SunocoInc.com and a 16 page printed summary of Sunoco's 2001 HES Report is available as a pdf file at www.SunocoInc.com or by contacting Sunoco at:
