Media Alert From METROPOLIS Magazine: Press Conference
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, May. 8 -/E-Wire/Business Wire/-- METROPOLIS Magazine
-- Why is green design so slow to catch on in the U.S.?
-- Why is it important for designers to know green principles?
-- How does design education need to change for future designers to be more sensitive to our environmental health?
Find out the answers to these and other questions at the Metropolis Conference at the ICFF.
On May 20th, METROPOLIS magazine will host its annual conference at New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center as part of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (May 18-21). "Teaching Green: Making Sustainability Integral to Every Designer's Education" is for educators, designers, architects, and students as well as businesses. The conference will provide a forum to discuss the importance of green design and how its principles can become standard in the design school curriculum and design practices.
As a member of the press, you are invited to attend a pre-conference briefing from 9-9:30 a.m. in the ICFF Theatre at the Javits Center. Susan S. Szenasy, editor in chief of METROPOLIS, will preview "Teaching Green" and reveal the results of an online survey that takes the pulse of green design education today. You are welcome to stay for the conference, which concludes at 5:30 p.m.
About the Conference
"Teaching Green," sponsored by Interface Flooring Systems and GLM/ICFF, sets out to define an action plan for making sustainability integral to every design student's coursework, essential to every design school's curriculum, and common knowledge among designers and architects. More than 20 influential speakers will participate in panel discussions and interactive sessions, including:
-- Architects Andrew Freear and Jay Sanders of the late Samuel Mockbee's Rural Studio at Auburn University
-- Developer Douglas Durst, the Durst Organization
-- Jonathan F. P. Rose, Jonathan Rose and Companies
-- Administrator Joyce Lee, New York City Office of Management and Budget, chairman AIA Committee on the Environment
-- Educator Jean Gardner, Parsons School of Design
-- Business/Design Consultant Peter Lawrence, director, Corporate Design Foundation
A lunch break from 12:30 p.m. to 1:55 p.m. offers attendees an optional tour of the ICFF. "We celebrate the wisdom of architects like the late Samuel Mockbee of Auburn's Rural Studio," Susan Szenasy says. "This day is dedicated to his generous spirit and to heightening our awareness of conscientious design practices. We hope to help implement sustainable programs that will ensure a healthy future for our cities, ourselves, and our descendants."
Please attend the morning press briefing at 9:00 a.m. with Susan and as many other sessions as you like, and learn the latest thinking on sustainable design. To receive a press pass, call Christine Gillies at (212) 886-2501 or send an e-mail to: [REDACTED-EMAIL].
