Three New DualSand Facilities Deliver Clean, Affordable Drinking Water in Upstate New York
Modular Design Allows DualSand to Serve the Needs of Both Large and
NEW YORK, SYRACUSE, Jun. 17 -/E-Wire/-- DSS Environmental Inc., an advanced water filtration company, has brought online three new potable water treatment facilities that will provide communities in the Adirondacks with more than 1.4 million gallons per day of clean drinking water drawn from surface water sources. DSS is a subsidiary of Covanta Water Systems Inc., of Fairfield, N.J., which specializes in design-build-operate solutions for public and private clients needing potable water and/or wastewater treatment facilities.
The three new DSS facilities are further examples of the Company's industry-leading DualSand(TM) technology, a low-cost, high-performance process for treating drinking water and wastewater. DualSand(TM), in testing conducted by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, demonstrated superior protection against disease causing parasites such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium (oo)cysts, achieving a 7 log removal. The new drinking water plants consistently produce potable water with turbidity below 0.1 NTU.
The first successful DualSand(TM) installation was in the Village of Stamford N.Y., where a 360,000 gallon-per-day (GPD) facility has been in operation since 1998. The communities where new DualSand(TM) facilities are in operation include:
* Village of Port Henry, NY; 360,000 GPD * Town of Wilmington, NY; 360,000 GPD * St. Regis Mohawk Indian Nation, Hogansburg, NY; 720,000 GPD
DSS also is preparing within the next month to bring online a fourth treatment facility in Keesville, N.Y., where the facility will provide up to 720,000 GPD of potable water.
Joe Burgess, president of Covanta Water, said, "DualSand(TM) is the ideal technology for these communities and we're proud that we have delivered these facilities on time and within budget, just as we promised. We believe there are literally dozens of communities in Central and upstate New York who are looking for the same kind of low-cost, high-quality performance that only DualSand(TM) can provide."
Jeff George, managing director, noted that the modular design of DualSand(TM)allows the technology to handle the needs of small municipal systems to major regional water suppliers. DualSand(TM) also is being deployed in the 25 million GPD Tampa Bay Water Desalination currently under construction in west Central Florida. The Tampa Bay facility is scheduled to come online by the end of 2002.
"The beauty of DualSand(TM) is its simplicity and flexibility," George said. "It can process flows ranging from thousands of gallons per day up to many millions of gallons per day."
