ARCADIS Assists in South African Educational Program
EUROPE, NETHERLANDS, ARNHEM, Jun. 11 -/E-Wire/Business Wire/-- ARCADIS (Nasdaq: ARCAF; Euronext: ARCAD) today announced that it has won a project aimed at improving the educational systems and institutions in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.
ARCADIS Euroconsult, a subsidiary of ARCADIS NV specialized in institutional developing projects for developing countries, will carry out the project. The government of the United Kingdom through its Department for International Development will fund the project, with a total value of EUR 20 million and duration of 3 years.
The Department of Education in the Eastern Cape (ECED) in South Africa faces many challenges, which date back to the divided and inequitable history of education under apartheid. Efforts to integrate the old segregated school systems have been underway since 1994, and involved creating one uniform standard of the more than 6,000 schools, which operate under the supervision of the Department. In 2000, a new phase in this process was entered with the introduction of an initiative, which was launched by the National Minister of Education for South Africa, professor Kader Asmal.
Five major programs have been identified by the ECED and have been included in the Eastern Cape Provincial District and School Development Program. Under this program, ARCADIS Euroconsult provides management consultancy services:
- Turning schools into community centers in support of democratic government structures;
- Combating adult illiteracy;
- Restructuring higher education systems;
- Accepting and integrating the new school system in the local community;
- Creating tools to mitigate the effects of AIDS by developing care and support facilities.
ARCADIS Euroconsult won the project based on the Company's history in institutional development in many nations. The Company has extensive experience working with local specialists who are closely involved in the development of structures and systems required by economical and social advancement in developing countries.
Michiel Jaski, member of the Executive Board of ARCADIS said: "In ARCADIS' strategy for donor-financed activities we have a stated policy to move away from the more traditional land and water projects towards institutional development. Clearly this project is a good example of the management consultancy activities into which we seek expansion. It also serves as proof of ARCADIS' ability to support many European governments in their international development projects."
