Environmental Artist Wyland Receives John M. Olguin Award for Contributions to Marine Life Preservation
CALIFORNIA, SAN PEDRO, Jul. 8 -/E-Wire/Business Wire/-- Hailed for his Whaling Wall murals around the world, marine life artist Wyland has received the John M. Olguin Award from the Friends of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium for his contributions to ocean conservation and environmental education.
The award was presented to Wyland by Dr. Robert Schuller, founder of the Crystal Cathedral, at a ceremony at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium on April 27. Past recipients include underwater explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau, marine biologist Dr. Sylvia Earle, architect Frank Gehry and marine life photographer Bob Talbot.
"Wyland was selected because through his art he raises awareness about our ocean resources and that helps everyone in the marine community," said Michelle Sprokkereef, a spokesperson for the Friends of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.
"And his educational programs are very much in line with what we do as far as our goals to educate children about the marine environment."
The John M. Olguin Marine Environment Award is presented to individuals, businesses, corporations or organizations that have demonstrated a significant contribution to the betterment of the marine environment, generation of interest in young people in marine science, enhancement of public science education, or development of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.
Wyland is considered one of the world's most well-known marine life artists. His work is seen by an estimated 1 billion people every year and "Ocean Planet," his 1992 mural on the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, Calif., was recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records as the World's Largest Mural.
Since 1981, Wyland has painted 89 football field-sized "whaling walls" throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, New Zealand and Japan.
All the artist's murals are made possible through the Wyland Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that will partner next fall with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif., to launch a free nationwide marine life art and environmental science educational program. Wyland's time is donated for his mural projects.
