Biocorp N.A. Packaging to be Recognized at the World Summit on Sustainable Development
Oak Grove School Recycling & Sustainable Program using Biocorp N.A.'s
biodegradable food utensils
will be recognized in Johannesburg, South Africa
CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES, Aug. 12 -/E-Wire/-- "Children of Tomorrow, Profile of a Sustainable School" is the title of the Video produced by Armstrong & Associates featuring the Recycling & Sustainable program selected to be viewed at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. The video features Fred Hall, Buildings and Groundskeeper at Oak Grove school. Oak Grove School is located in Graton west of Santa Rosa, California. Accredited for his work developing and maintaining sustainable resource practices at Oak Grove School, Hall says "We started this program for economic reasons and have continued for environmental reasons".
Through their extensive recycling and composting program involving paper, cardboard, biodegradable cutlery and straws, milk cartons, and mixed recyclables, the Oak Grove School has reduced waste from eight yards per week to one âsaving over $6,000 a year in waste hauling alone. Put in a child's perspective, the school estimates their recycling of paper and cardboard and the use of recycled paper saves about 32 trees per week. Additionally, fossil fuels savings were made in using biodegradables made of renewable resources, provided by Biocorp North America, Inc.
To further reduce costs and energy consumption, Oak Grove School has installed a 5.28 Kw photovoltaic solar system. An Award from the Sonoma County Public Works Agency, funds from the Oak Grove Union School District and matching funds from the State of California were used to purchase the system. The solar energy system generates enough energy to power lights, computers and heat pumps for two classrooms saving between $2,000 and $4,000 per year and reducing the need for energy generated with non-renewable resources. "The kids get to see it in action, they get to learn through solar energy program that the sun can actually provide us with useable energy" said David Henry, Owner of Harmony Farm Supply and volunteer consultant for the school' solar energy program.
Oak Grove is saving big dollars, engaging in sustainable resource practices and teaching students about the environment in which they live and need to respect. "We are pleased and proud to have our biodegradable products included in the Oak Grove sustainable program. It is right for schools to teach environmental excellence to children and to show them that development does not exclude the respect of nature" said Frederic Scheer, Biocorp N.A's president.
About the World Summit on Sustainable Development
The World Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg Summit 2002, will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, August 26 through September 4, 2002 at the Sandron Convention Center. The Summit will be the world's largest international meeting on sustainability and will bring together thousands of participants, including heads of state and government, business leaders and representatives of civil society, to promote sustainable development. Sustainable development is a call for a different approach to development and a different type of international cooperation â it recognizes that decision taken in one part of the world may affect people in other regions, and requires far- sighted actions to promote global conditions that support progress and benefits for all. About Biocorp North America and its biodegradable packaging
Biocorp N.A.'s innovative manufacturing process combines cornstarch with other biodegradable materials to produce packaging that are 100% biodegradable and compostable. And unlike so-called "degradable plastic," Biocorp N.A. products do not use polyethylene or polystyrene and do not leave any plastic residue. When composted, Biocorp N.A. packaging biodegrade completely into carbon dioxide, water and biomass in 30-60 days, just like food scraps and yard trimmings. Composting organic waste has always been difficult, since all contaminants such as plastic utensils and polystyrene packaging must be first separated from the waste stream, a painstaking process that is usually too costly and labor intensive to make economic sense. Biocorp N.A. products can be disposed along with leftover food in biodegradable trash bags that can be taken directly to a composting facility without expensive sorting.
Biocorp North America is a leading provider of biodegradable packaging designed to meet the highest needs for sustainability. Biocorp N.A. assists individuals, communities, schools, businesses and governments in finding innovative ways to reach sustainability in the use and disposal of biodegradable packaging, relying on organic material through sophisticated waste recovery systems. Biocorp N.A. is involved in all levels of the supply and the recovery of sustainable packaging.
Biocorp N.A.'s products include lawn and leaf bags, bin liners, and food serviceware such as cutlery, cups, straws, lids and plates. Recently Biocorp N.A introduced new cups and food containers made of NatureWorks PLAâ¢. Its products were used recently at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City by the Coca-Cola Company.
Biocorp is based in Los Angeles, California. More information is available at: www.Biocorpna.com.
