The Climate Trust Signs $1.2 Million Contract with Sure Power Corporation; Unveils "Pay-on-Delivery" Model for Greenhouse Gas Reductions
CONNECTICUT, DANBURY, Sep. 30 -/E-Wire/-- The Climate Trust of Portland, Ore. has committed $1.2 million to helping Sure Power Corporation of Danbury, Conn. install highly reliable and efficient onsite power generation systems that reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.
"Sure Power's systems emit less carbon dioxide than grid-based power," said Mike Burnett, executive director of The Climate Trust. "We'll purchase these reduced carbon dioxide emissions using an innovative 'pay-on-delivery' model that makes annual payments to Sure Power for carbon dioxide offsets after a third party verifies the magnitude of the reduction."
This payment arrangement, which The Climate Trust calls groundbreaking, will help promote Sure Power's systems, making them more attractive to energy-reliant businesses that are seeking a more reliable power source than the utility grid.
"It's vital to the high-tech sector that we find new, energy efficient technologies to meet both current and future power needs," said Bill Edmonds, Board Chair of The Climate Trust. "By working with Sure Power – an east coast company with national relevance – we are helping businesses across the nation take cost-effective steps to address climate change. Worldwide, businesses must be part of the solution, by finding smart and creative ways to curb increases in greenhouse gas emissions."
"This deal represents an innovative way for technology-dependent companies to easily and more affordably adopt energy solutions that positively impact the environment, solve critical energy reliability and cost issues, and improve their bottom lines," says Chris Robertson of Chris Robertson & Associates, an energy and environmental consulting practice that assisted Sure Power in planning and implementing the sale of avoided greenhouse gas emissions to the Climate Trust.
Sure Power's environmentally-friendly systems compete with conventional power systems by producing what the company calls "24-by-7-by-forever" computer-grade electricity through a patented architecture of multiple power generation devices, including fuel cells, gas reciprocating engines and turbines – all installed with state-of-the-art environmental controls. Sure Power's systems eliminate the need for environmentally unfriendly back-up batteries and diesel generators, while integrating "combined heat and power (CHP)" technologies that recycle byproduct heat through highly efficient heating and cooling systems.
Sure Power's onsite systems are engineered specifically for energy-reliant businesses, including: data centers; high-tech manufacturing and process industries; research and development laboratories; health care facilities; government and military facilities; and utilities. "Not only do our systems represent a cleaner way for businesses to meet their energy needs, they operate indefinitely without any reliance on the existing utility grid. They have been independently verified to operate at the known limit of uninterruptibility," says Bill Cratty, chief technology officer and co-founder of Sure Power Corp.
About The Climate Trust - The Climate Trust is a nonprofit organization formed in 1997 in response to landmark Oregon legislation requiring new power plants to counter their global warming impact. This innovative legislation allows power plant developers to meet this carbon dioxide (CO2) emission standard by making a payment to The Climate Trust, which uses the funds to stimulate projects that avoid, displace or sequester CO2 emissions. These projects are called offsets because they offset the production of CO2 from new Oregon power plants. This project was chosen for funding from The Climate Trust's 2001 solicitation for offset projects. Further information about this and other offset projects funded by The Climate Trust is available at www.climatetrust.org.
About Sure Power Corporation- Sure Power delivers highly reliable electrical and thermal energy to mission-critical operations such as data centers, high-tech manufacturing facilities and R&D; laboratories. The patented SurePower® system, which guarantees 99.9999 percent long-term availability of computer-grade electricity (equivalent to a 1 percent chance of failure in 20 years), is a point-of-use energy center that incorporates multiple generators such as turbines, fuel cells and gas reciprocating engines into standard combined heat and power (CHP) configurations. The efficient Sure Power® system delivers better economic value and environmental leadership than traditional "utility grid plus backup power solutions." Sure Power provides users with substantially increased uptime, allowing for higher revenues and fewer unexpected losses.
About Chris Robertson & Associates - Chris Robertson & Associates is a Portland, Ore. based consulting practice founded in 1989. CRA works with companies to improve energy and resource efficiency and environmental performance. These strategic initiatives reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve productivity and enhance business competitiveness.
