Leaders in High Performance Green Building to Be Honored at Inaugural Green Building Conference in Austin, Texas

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, WASHINGTON, Oct. 18 -/E-Wire/-- Environmental leaders responsible for transforming the country's building industry to be more energy efficient and environmentally sound will be recognized at a gala dinner in Austin, Texas on Nov. 14, 2002.

The award ceremony is part of the U. S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) First Annual International Green Building Conference and Exposition, Nov. 13-15, at the Austin Convention Center. Organizers are expecting over 2,000 attendees at this first-of-its-kind conference in the United States.

"We want to honor some of the people leading this remarkable market transformation," said USGBC President & CEO, Christine Ervin. "It's important to recognize the human side of the green building formula -- whether it be champions on the drawing board, the construction site, the government program office, the manufacturing plant or executive suite. It just wouldn't happen without these leaders."

The annual Green Building Leadership Awards program will recognize outstanding achievement within three major categories:

Green Public Service Awards Non-Government (NGO) -- This award recognizes an NGO or non-profit organization making a significant contribution to advancing and causing the transformation of green buildings in the public sector.

Government -- This award recognizes a government official or organization that has made significant changes in policies, codes, standards, tax and other incentives, project development requirements and other organizational priorities as well as polices that further the adoption of LEED (TM) standards.

The Green Building Business Award will honor an individual or company that has demonstrated entrepreneurial leadership in advancing the green building market through establishing a program, methodology, technique or product.

USGBC Leadership Award will honor an individual who has demonstrated a sustained commitment to the USGBC through active leadership and participation in the development and advancement of the Council's mission and purpose.

The USGBC is the nation's leading coalition promoting green buildings. Founded in 1993, it is a nonprofit, membership-driven coalition of private and public sector organizations working to advance buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live and work. The USGBC developed and administers the LEED(TM) program -- Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The LEED Green Building Rating System(TM) has become the leading standard in the industry and is used by governments, developers, universities and nonprofit organizations. The USGBC is based in Washington, D.C. and has chapters around the country.
