Give Back to Mom and Mother Earth this Mother's Day

FLORIDA, GAINESVILLE, Jan. 22 -/E-Wire/-- In Native American folklore, Mother Earth is embodied by a turtle floating in a huge, primal sea. Although sea turtles have lived on the Earth for more than 150 million years, today all seven species face extinction. That's why the Sea Turtle Survival League is offering a sea turtle adoption as the perfect Mother's Day gift for the environmentally conscious Mom.

Like most mothers, sea turtles have to overcome incredible obstacles to fulfill their maternal duties. They have to navigate polluted, net-infested oceans to get from their feeding grounds to the nesting beaches where they lay their eggs, sometimes thousands of miles away. Turtles also must compete with rapidly spreading oceanfront development to find suitable nesting sites. In some parts of the world, mother sea turtles are even hunted and killed as they crawl ashore to nest.

"The demise of sea turtles is telling us something about the way we are neglecting Mother Earth," said Dan Evans, Education Coordinator of the Sea Turtle Survival League. "As people everywhere honor their mothers this Mother's Day, the gift of a turtle adoption allows people to give something back to Mother Earth, too."

To adopt a sea turtle for Mother's Day, call the Sea Turtle Survival League at [REDACTED-PHONE] or visit their web site at www.cccturtle.org. For a tax-deductible donation of $25, the League will send your mother a personalized color sea turtle adoption certificate, a sea turtle fact sheet, colorful decal and magnet, and a subscription to the organization's quarterly newsletter, all in a beautiful color folder. Turtle adoptions support international efforts to protect endangered sea turtles and their habitats.

The Sea Turtle Survival League is the education and outreach program of the nonprofit Caribbean Conservation Corporation, the world's oldest marine turtle research and conservation organization. Founded in 1959 by renowned sea turtle scientist Dr. Archie Carr, the Florida-based organization is dedicated to ensuring the survival of sea turtles through research, education, advocacy and the protection of natural habitats upon which they depend.

In May, sea turtles begin returning to the land to complete the ancient act of laying their eggs in the sand. You can help ensure sea turtles continue this important cycle by adopting one of these mothers-to-be for your own Mom.
