AT&T; Announces Industrial Ecology Research Grants

NEW JERSEY, BEDMINSTER, Feb. 4 -/E-Wire/-- AT&T; today announced Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellowships grants to researchers from six leading universities. Industrial Ecology is a multidisciplinary field that studies industrial and economic systems and their linkage with natural systems. The universities receiving grants are:

* Ball State University, Muncie, Ind., for "Diversifying Industrial Ecology in Higher Education: The University as an Institutional Ecology";

* Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Penn., for "Comparative Energy and Environmental Implications of Wired versus Wireless Communications Networks";

* Leiden University, Netherlands, for "Materials and Energy Terms of Information Society -- Measuring the Weight of Information";

* The University of California, Davis for "Lead-Based Solder in Electronics: An Industrial Ecology Assessment of Current Inventory and End-of- Life Management";

* The University of Massachusetts, Amherst for "Supernetworks and the Environment: Foundations and a Virtual Center"; and,

* The University of Missouri-Rolla for "Artifact System Reengineering for Sustainable Product Development". The winning researchers each receive $25,000 and are designated "AT&T; Faculty Fellows in Industrial Ecology."

"AT&T;'s unique Industrial Ecology Fellowship program continues to demonstrate the social and environmental benefits that can result when companies and leading universities collaborate in support of cutting-edge, basic research and educational innovation," said Brad Allenby, AT&T; Environment, Health and Safety vice president.
