FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Powerball International Completes Initial Objectives in Pilot Sodium Plant
UTAH, WEST VALLEY CITY, Feb. 6 -/E-Wire/-- Powerball International Inc. (OTC BB: PRBL) is pleased to announce that it has achieved all of its initial objectives and goals established for the sodium pilot plant located in West Valley City. Powerball holds two issued patents for a process to convert sodium hydroxide into elemental sodium. The pilot plant successfully demonstrated continuous and consistent production of elemental sodium with the addition of engineered sodium handling systems for the fully computerized pumping, spraying, metering, temperature control and product filtering of the finished sodium. Powerball will now focus its efforts on the licensing of its technologies to industrial and commercial partners.
"Demonstrating the ability to recycle sodium hydroxide into elemental sodium was a crucial element for maximizing the potential for the hydrogen generation technology in existing industrial and emerging fuel cell hydrogen markets. Not only does this allow a lower cost for the hydrogen, but it opens up possible licensing opportunities in the commercial sodium market," commented William Freise, Powerball's president.
Commercial sodium is currently made using a "Downs Cell" which electrolyzes molten salt. The weakness of the Downs Cell process is that it is labor intensive and consumes large amounts of electricity. By contrast, Powerball believes that its proprietary process will prove to be more labor efficient, energy flexible and therefore more cost effective on a commercial scale.
In the recent State of the Union Address, President Bush said, "A single chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen generates energy, which can be used to power a car -- producing only water, not exhaust fumes. With a new national commitment, our scientists and engineers will overcome obstacles to taking these cars from laboratory to showroom, so that the first car driven by a child born today could be powered by hydrogen, and pollution-free." Bush's call for a $1.2 billion research initiative for hydrogen-fueled automobiles created a fresh public awareness of the value that hydrogen could contribute toward a healthy environment and energy independence from imported Middle Eastern oil. Powerball believes that with the achievement of these milestones in the process used to create its main hydrogen production of raw materials, it is uniquely positioned to benefit from the President's proposed hydrogen initiative.
Powerball is a development-stage company that has patented a proprietary technology to safely generate and store hydrogen as a solid material at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The energy potential of hydrogen is carried in the chemical bonds of sodium hydride, which in the presence of water, releases hydrogen. The reaction that occurs is exothermic and requires no additional input of heat energy to release the hydrogen. The process supplies pure hydrogen on demand for energy applications without the need for expensive catalysts, compression or liquefaction. Hydrogen is used to power fuel cells, internal combustion engines, heating, food processing and many industrial applications. Powerball has also patented a process for converting sodium hydroxide into elemental sodium, which is the basic raw material required for the hydrogen production technology.
