FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

U.S. Secretary of Energy, Spencer Abraham, Receives Meritorious Service Award

at National Hydrogen Association Conference

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, WASHINGTON, Mar. 7 -/E-Wire/-- Yesterday, the National Hydrogen Association (NHA) bestowed United States Secretary of Energy, Spencer Abraham, with their 2003 Meritorious Service Award at their 14th Annual U.S. Hydrogen Conference in Washington, DC.

The NHA commended Secretary Abraham for the development of the "National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap," and his work in developing the Hydrogen Fuel Initiative, announced by President Bush in his January 2003 State of the Union Address. The award also cited the Secretary's initiatives for FreedomCAR, and last week, the Coal Sequestration Leadership Forum and the world's first zero-emissions, coal-to-hydrogen FutureGen power plant. Since assuming the Department of Energy's leadership on January 20, 2001, Secretary Abraham has created many significant initiatives to support hydrogen technology development in the interest of energy security and a cleaner environment. The National Hydrogen Association applauds the Secretary's leadership in promoting these important steps in the transition to hydrogen fuel.

Other recipients of 2003 Meritorious Service Awards were Air Products and Chemicals, Inc, Mr. Guy Tomberlin, Commercial Inspections Supervisor for Fairfax County, Virginia and Mr. Robert Mauro, Technical and Policy Advisor to the Board of Directors of the National Hydrogen Association.

Air Products and Chemicals was commended for its development of the Las Vegas Refueling Station, the world's first energy station featuring the co-production of hydrogen and electricity and for its KNOW H2OWSM Hydrogen Safety Training Workshops. Air Products and Chemicals, the world's largest producers of commercial hydrogen, has consistently shown corporate leadership in developing hydrogen's future as an energy carrier.

The NHA also recognized Guy Tomberlin, for his dedication to ensuring safe use of hydrogen in future applications. Over the past two years, Mr. Tomberlin has worked diligently to make the appropriate changes in the International Fire Code, International Mechanical Code, International Building Code, and the International Fuel Gas Code, to include hydrogen fuel. Through Mr. Tomberlin's efforts, the transition to hydrogen's eventual use in every day applications has been made easier. Bob Mauro's Award recognizes his many years as a manager, technology analyst and policy advisor for the National Hydrogen Association since its inception in 1989. Mauro performed the National Hydrogen Association's first Technology Assessment, examining methods of hydrogen production, storage, end-use, safety and development potential. Initially sponsored by NASA, the technology assessment provided the groundwork for virtually all future National Hydrogen Association technical and policy initiatives and publications.
