Take Action this Earth Day with a Gift for the Sea

FLORIDA, GAINESVILLE, Mar. 12 -/E-Wire/-- In Native American folklore, the Earth is often portrayed as the back of a giant sea turtle floating in a vast, primal sea. Even today, sea turtles are fitting ambassadors for safeguarding the health of the planet. This Earth Day, take action to honor the Earth and sea turtles by "adopting" one of these ancient mariners?

Although sea turtles have lived on the Earth for about 200 million years, all seven species face serious threats to their survival. That's why the Sea Turtle Survival League, an offshoot of the oldest sea turtle research and conservation group in the world, is inviting people to adopt a sea turtle to celebrate Earth Day and to support ongoing programs that protect these magnificent creatures. Your gift to the sea will support programs that help these endangered species survive.

Sea turtles overcome incredible obstacles to complete their life cycles. They navigate thousands of miles of ocean, facing pollution, nets, and other hazards as they migrate to and from their feeding grounds to their nesting beaches. Sea turtles must compete with rampant oceanfront development and beaches lit up with artificial lights to find suitable nesting sites. And in many parts of the world, sea turtles are hunted and killed for meat as they crawl ashore.

"Marine turtles are like messengers from the sea. Their demise tells us that mankind is neglecting the Earth," said David Godfrey, director of the Sea Turtle Survival League. "Adopting a turtle for Earth Day is a great way to begin giving back to the Earth what we have taken away รขย€ย” and it makes a caring gift for conservation-minded friends and family."

To adopt a sea turtle for Earth Day, call the Sea Turtle Survival League at [REDACTED-PHONE] or visit their web site at www.cccturtle.org. For a tax-deductible donation of $25, the League will send a personalized full-color sea turtle adoption certificate, a sea turtle fact sheet, colorful decal and magnet, and a subscription to the organization's quarterly newsletter, all in a beautifully illustrated folder. Turtle adoptions are the primary source of support for effective international programs that are protecting endangered sea turtles and their habitats.

The Sea Turtle Survival League is an education and outreach program of the nonprofit Caribbean Conservation Corporation, the world's oldest marine turtle research and conservation organization. Founded in 1959 to support the pioneering work of renowned ecologist and author, Dr. Archie Carr, the Florida-based CCC is dedicated to ensuring the survival of sea turtles through research, education, advocacy and the protection of the natural habitats upon which they depend.
