TOP U.S. OFFICIALS TO SPEAK AT LOW-RANK FUELS SYMPOSIUM

GRAND FORKS, NORTH DAKOTA, May. 15 -/E-Wire/-- The University of North Dakota's Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) announced today that two U.S. senators and one of the government's top energy officials will deliver keynote addresses at the upcoming Low-Rank Fuels Symposium.

U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND), U.S. Senator Conrad Burns (R-MT), and Rita Bajura, Director of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory will discuss the increasing demand for efficient and environmentally safe uses of low-rank coal, current challenges of environmental standards, upcoming legislation, and new methodologies in low-rank coal utilization.

The 18th Low-Rank Fuels Symposium will be held at the Holiday Inn Grand Montana Hotel in Billings, Montana, June 24รขย€ย“26, 2003. After a 10-year absence, the 3-day conference has returned and will serve as an international forum for the coal industry. The conference will address current industry needs, research findings, and potential areas of future research.

"An ever-increasing demand for electricity and energy in the United States and the world has made it a necessity to have efficient and environmentally acceptable uses of low-rank fuel. Low-rank coal and other lower-rank fuel resources are abundant and can contribute significantly and economically to meeting energy needs," said Carl Bauer, Associate Director of the DOE Office of Coal & Environmental Systems.

Several of the world's top energy officials from as far away as Australia, Japan, China, and Germany will deliver technical presentations during the conference. Two concurrent sessions will be held, and covering topics such as low-rank fuel properties and upgrading, environmental issues and control technologies, coalbed methane, combustion systems, gasification systems, and fuel by-products utilization.

There have been a lot of advancements in the utilization of low-rank coal in recent years, said EERC Director Gerald Groenewold. "The rebirth of this conference is a great opportunity to unite industry leaders, government, and the research community to share information and discuss developing more efficient, cleaner ways of burning low-rank coal," Groenewold said.

Organizing sponsors for the event include the DOE, EPRI, and the EERC.

The event is open to the public. Registration is $400 per person through May 31 and $500 per person after that.
