FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

University of Massachusetts, Amherst Awarded AT&T; Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellowship

NEW JERSEY, BEDMINSTER, May. 22 -/E-Wire/-- AT&T; selected researchers from six leading universities, including the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (UMASS), to receive an AT&T; Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellowship. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst received a $25,000 renewal grant to support their project, "Supernetworks and the Environment: Foundations and a Virtual Center."

Industrial Ecology is a multidisciplinary field that studies industrial and economic systems and their linkage with natural systems. It also intersects with disciplines such as law, economics, anthropology, business studies, engineering, and the social and physical sciences. Other recipients of this year's faculty fellowship include Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.; Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh; Leiden University, Netherlands; University of California, Davis; and University of Missouri-Rolla.

"We are thrilled with the recognition and support that the 2002 AT&T; Industrial Ecology Fellowship will provide for our research and activities surrounding supernetworks and the environment," said Dr. Anna Nagurney, the John F. Smith Memorial Professor, Isenberg School of Management at UMASS. "It will also enhance the Virtual Center for Supernetworks and leverage our studies in new directions to include e-cycling and financial networks with electronic transactions and environmental criteria."

In this renewal of the supernetworks and environment project, the research team will further the development of an environmental supernetwork framework for the conceptualization, modeling, qualitative analysis, and solution of complex decision-making processes under risk and uncertainty. The team's research has already established the Virtual Center for Supernetworks (http://supernet.som.umass.edu) and has yielded models and analytical tools for the study of supply chain networks (single-country as well as global ones) with electronic commerce in which the decision-makers are faced with environmental criteria as well as regional and global financial networks with intermediation and electronic transactions. The research to-date has been accepted in refereed journals and has been presented at international conferences. Specific new applications that will be explored through modeling, analysis, and computations will include: supply chain networks with recycling, notably, "e- cycling," and the environmental aspects of financial networks with electronic transactions.

"From an industrial ecology perspective, it is increasingly important to understand networks, from supply chains to financial systems, and help them function in environmentally appropriate ways," said Brad Allenby, AT&T; Environment, Health and Safety vice president. "The research in supernetworks at the University of Massachusetts is a unique contribution to this growing field that we are proud to support."

The AT&T; Foundation established the Industrial Ecology Grants Program in 1993 to encourage academic activity in this field. Since then, the program has awarded faculty research fellowships, supported the Colloquium on Industrial Ecology at the National Academy of Sciences and a number of conferences on research in the field, and helped launch the Journal of Industrial Ecology. The program is consistent with AT&T;'s environmental and social responsibility and its support of environmental initiatives and organizations.

The AT&T; Foundation invests in projects that address a range of public concerns. It emphasizes programs that serve the needs of people in communities where AT&T; has a significant business presence; initiatives that use technology in innovative ways; and programs in which AT&T; employees are actively involved as contributors and/or volunteers.
