"Compostable Logo" of the Biodegradable Products Institute gains momentum with approval DuPont™ Biomax® resin

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, Jun. 12 -/E-Wire/-- The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) awarded its "Compostable Logo" to DuPont™ Biomax‚ 4026 hydro/biodegradable polyester resin. This is the third resin to be approved in the past 12 months, further expanding the array of resins and products in the BPI program. This symbol demonstrates to users and composters that products made from Biomax® meet ASTM D6400-99 "Specification for Compostable Plastics" and are designed to biodegrade swiftly and completely, when composted in commercial or municipal facilities.

"Customers and endusers rely on the BPI to independently verify biodegradability and compostability of materials," stated Jeffrey McGlaughlin, DuPont™ Biomax® Global Commercial Manager. "Meeting the ASTM Specifications assures that products will biodegrade in a reasonable amount of time and safely."

Biomax® 4026 is a hydro/biodegradable resin, and can be used as a film or coating in disposable food service packaging, such as bowls, plates, cups, sandwich wraps and clamshell sandwich containers. Biomax® has earned similar compostable approvals from DIN CERTCO in Europe and the Biodegradable Plastics Society in Japan. Applications are currently being developed and marketed in Europe, North America and Asia.

"The Compostable Logo program is beginning to generate significant interest amongst resins suppliers, converters, municipal officials and composters," stated Steven Mojo, BPI Executive Director. Products carrying the BPI emblem include bags, cups, salad, fruit and vegetable containers, fibers, and paper coatings. "With an expanding array of approved products coming to market, consumers and composters will become increasingly aware as to the benefits of using these products in organics recovery programs," Mojo added.
