ADVISORY/Canon Envirothon Draws Teenagers to International Environmental Competition

NEW YORK, LAKE SUCCESS, Jul. 8 -/E-Wire/Business Wire/-- --

Who: Over 250 teenagers from 50 U.S. states and Canadian provinces

What: 2003 Canon Envirothon, international environmental education competition for US $30,000 in college scholarships

When: July 26-31, 2003

Where: Emmitsburg, Maryland, U.S.A.

Why: To educate young people about environmental conservation

High school students from across the U.S. and Canada will convene July 26-31 in Emmitsburg, Maryland, to participate in North America's largest high school environmental education competition. Participants will learn about environmental issues affecting natural resources as they compete for awards in the 2003 Canon Envirothon.

The 16th annual gathering of high school students interested in gaining a better understanding of conservation will be held at Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The Maryland web site is www.mdisfun.org.

This year's national competition is the second hosted by Maryland. The first was in 1992. The site of the competition, under the supervision of The Maryland Envirothon Steering Committee, is located in Frederick County, which is close to south-central Pennsylvania, the eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Annapolis. The Maryland Envirothon is sponsored by the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts and the State Soil Conservation Committee.

Fifty teams, 44 from the U.S. and six from Canada, involving over 250 students will compete in the 2003 Canon Envirothon for a share of the US $30,000 in college scholarships. Organized through the National Association of Conservation Districts, the competition tests teams on knowledge of soils/land use, forestry, aquatics ecology, wildlife and this year's current issue of agricultural land conservation and preservation.

The Canon Envirothon is the culmination of a series of competitions that began this past spring involving more than 500,000 teenagers throughout North America. In written tests and oral presentations, five member teams from schools and organizations competed for the distinction of representing their state or province at the Canon Envirothon.

Each team's knowledge will be tested under the supervision of foresters, soil scientists and wildlife specialists. Teamwork, problem solving and oral presentation skills will be evaluated as each team offers a panel of judges an oral presentation containing recommendations for solving an environmental challenge.

This is the seventh year the competition is sponsored by Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE: CAJ). Canon delivers consumer, business-to-business and industrial imaging solutions. Canon works to protect the environment through its award-winning Clean Earth Campaign that encompasses development of energy-efficient office products, equipment remanufacturing and materials reuse, and the protection of endangered species and environmental education through its corporate philanthropy and employee volunteerism.
