FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Conference set for September 22â24 at Marriott Crystal Gateway, Arlington VA
Top U.S. Officials and National Experts Slated to Speak at Upcoming Air
GRAND FORKS, NORTH DAKOTA, Jul. 22 -/E-Wire/-- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND), U.S. Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND), and U.S. Representative Earl Pomeroy (D-ND) will deliver keynote addresses at the upcoming Air Quality IV Conference, September 22â24, 2003, at the Marriott Crystal Gateway in Arlington, Virginia.
Other invited speakers include U.S. Senator Craig Thomas (R-WY) and Carl Michael Smith, Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy of the U.S. Department of Energy. Clay S. Jenkinson, humanities scholar, will also present, in character, Thomas Jefferson's views on air quality and the environment.
Endorsed by all three senators and the U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham, the Air Quality IV Conference is the world's premier conference for reviewing the current state of science and policy for mercury, trace elements, and particulate matter in the environment. It is sponsored by the University of North Dakota's Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), the Center for Air Toxic Metals (CATM) through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Research and Development National Center for Environmental Research, and EPRI.
The Air Quality Conference provides a forum for industry, government, and research organizations to help enhance the environmental performance of the nation's future energy infrastructure.
"Air Quality IV will give participants an unparalleled opportunity to discuss relationships between science, engineering technologies, and regulations that lead to acceptable policies and programs, which protect human health, while at the same time, ensure economic growth," said EERC Director Gerald Groenewold.
"The timing of Air Quality IV is strategic, as EPA is scheduled to propose regulations for mercury emissions from coal- and oil-fired power plants by December 15, 2003, and issue final regulations by December 15, 2004," said Senators Conrad and Dorgan and Representative Pomeroy in a joint letter of endorsement to participants.
Air Quality IV will consist of two streams of technical presentations, featuring more than 70 presenters from around the world who will focus on air quality impacts on health and ecosystems, emission prevention and control, and atmospheric reactions and modeling. The conference also includes a poster session, exhibits, and three preconference workshops.
The event is open to the public. To access details on the program outline or to register, visit our Web Site at http://www.undeerc.org/aq4 or call Anne Fiala at (701) 777-3119. Exhibit space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve exhibit space or to inquire about sponsorship opportunities, contact Deb Haley at (701) 777-3120.
More than 400 attendees from 36 states and 15 countries attended Air Quality III in Arlington, Virginia, in September 2002.
