TO BUSINESS AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDITORS:

Corps to Consult with Advisory Council on Historic Preservation on Proposed Athens Power Plant

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, Jan. 30 -/E-Wire/-- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New York District announced today that it will consult with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) as it continues to process a request for construction and operation of a 1,080 megawatt, natural gas-fired electric generating plant in Athens, NY.

This consultation is required by federal regulation when a proposed project is determined to have an effect on historic properties. Specifically, the Corps points to visual impacts on the Olana State Historic Site, two residences and two unnamed structures that are eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

At the same time, the Corps believes that the proposed project may be modified or federal conditions imposed, including those conditions already imposed by state authorities, which would reduce, minimize or avoid these effects. This position is consistent with a similar determination previously made by the New York State Historic Preservation Officer.

This action is being taken pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The Corps will make every effort to conduct this coordination process as expeditiously as possible.
