TO ENVIRONMENT EDITORS:
Have Environmental Groups Sold Their Souls for Grants?
VIRGINIA, WARRENTON, Mar. 12 -/E-Wire/-- If you look at the US Fish& Wildlife agency as a major corporation whose clients are the hunters of America, many things become clear. It's "franchises," the DNR and DEPs in states across the country, sign on to programs many ordinary citizens either don't realize are put into place or if they do, hate. What they don't realize, is that some of the largest environmental groups, the ones whose magazines we all place proudly on our coffee tables as a sign that we are environmentally aware, work hand in glove with the state wildlife offices, who carry out the USF&W; dictates. These groups, including Audubon, Humane Society of the United States, ASPCA, Defenders of Wildlife, etc are what is called in the business, Non Governmental Organizations, (NGO) and they "front" for the agencies who, by law, cannot lobby for programs they want to see enacted. This team effort is very profitable for the environmental groups, even more than the tourism packages they fill their magazines with, even more than their membership dues and it makes them feel a part of the government, official and powerful.
Where does the money come from? In the 1980s USFish & Wildlife formed a foundation, underwritten by the Congress of the United States. They developed a marketing plan any huge company would be proud of, and started building a "partners" group of America's biggest corporations, as well as other US government agencies. Groups would send in for a grant and the USF&W; would present it to one of the corporations for fulfillment, separate from it's functions as an agency.
Other federal agencies, for example the US Geological Survey, also use their position in the federal government for career opportunities and building blocks to expansion of their rolls.USGS has announced on their web page that they want to be the first agency in the world to rid a country of an alien species, and then market their skills and experience internationally, sort of like "soldiers of fortune" against zebra mussels or kudzu, but those two hard to eliminate aliens are not what their first target is. The first target is the Mute swan,a large white bird most people picture quietly floating on a lake. Despite a nationwide propaganda campaign to demonize it and stories in major newspapers and on TV, the mute swan is still loved by more people than, say, the DNRs or the DEPs around the country are, so this is upsetting the agencies.
For several years mute swans have been shot on sight on Federal lands and now the USF&W; has sent out a recommendation that this extend to state properties. The extinction of the mute will answer two goals for the agencies. USGS can say they eliminated an "alien" species, although there is proof it has been here for more than two hundred and fifty years, at least. The USF&W; can concentrate on the Trumpeter swan, a bigger swan from the northwest and Alaska, which is already huntable in the Pacific Flyway. All of this, thanks to the cooperation of the people who mail you those lovely magazines. You might want to consider this, before renewing membership.
Call your state legislators and federal representatives and speak up for our wildlife. You can contact [REDACTED-EMAIL] for information. We volunteer and don't accept donations.
