GEMI Releases First of Its Kind Publication: New Paths to Business Value: Strategic Sourcing - Environment, Health, and Safety

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, Mar. 13 -/E-Wire/-- The Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI) today released a new publication, New Paths to Business Value: Strategic Sourcing-Environment, Health, and Safety. The guidance document was designed to address the business value of managing Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) in Procurement and was chaired by three GEMI companies.

"On behalf of GEMI, I am pleased to announce the development a first of its kind publication that systematically explores the importance of EHS issues in the procurement decision making," said John Harris, EH&S; Management Systems Coordinator, Ashland, Inc. and one of the Chairs of GEMI's Service Provider Work Group. Harris continued, "By working with our procurement colleagues, we can improve both EHS and financial performance in our companies."

Dale Moore, Contract Service Manager, Texas Instruments, also a Chair of the Work Group added, "It is extremely important for all employees to find ways to add value to their companies. This document outlines ways that we can add value by working with our suppliers and contractors by managing and impacting their environmental, health and safety performance."

"Companies that integrate EHS concerns in their strategic sourcing can create value by: reducing downtime, product life cycle cost and time to market; minimizing risks and liabilities; enhancing reputation and market share; and reducing overall costs dues to EHS considerations," said Chair, Bob Sherman, Manager, Environmental Management, Halliburton Company. Sherman added, "These four benefits add value to your business and demonstrate that supply chain management is an important focus for all companies."

"We commend the Chairs of the Work Group, the company representatives that worked on this document and ThermoRetec, our consultant, for helping to create a better awareness of the unique way that business value can be created through procurement decisions," said GEMI's Chair Rich Guimond, Vice President and Corporate Director, EHS, Motorola, Inc. "Through the creation and expansion of partnerships between EHS and Procurement professionals we have an extraordinary opportunity to improve EHS performance and maximize value for our companies," Guimond added.
