FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
ADVISORY/Allied Pilots Association Announces In-Flight Environmental Issues Forum
TEXAS, FORT WORTH, Mar. 14 -/E-Wire/-- Who: Co-sponsored by American Airlines' Corporate Medical Department and the Allied Pilots Association
What: In-Flight Environmental Issues Forum
When: Monday, March 19, 2001 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: American Airlines Training and Conference Center Room 3E-39, Eagle Wing 4501 Highway 360 Fort Worth, TX 76155 Tel. 817/956-1000
Why: Most aircrew members of jetliner aircraft routinely receive radiation exposures well in excess of amounts recommended for the general population, and even more than some workers classified as "occupationally exposed radiation workers" receive. These higher radiation exposure levels, along with other environmental hazards and physical stresses, are a health concern to the aircrew member whether he or she works in the cockpit or the cabin. At this forum, a variety of guest speakers will be discussing issues related to aircrew radiation exposure and other in-flight environmental concerns. Audience participation will be encouraged and a Discussion/ Q & A period will culminate the day's activities.
This is a rare and excellent opportunity to become informed and to help determine the future of how these environmental health concerns will be addressed.
Wallace Friedberg, Ph.D. and Kyle Copeland, Ph.D., Federal Aviation Administration, Civil Aeromedical Institute will be speaking on the cosmic radiation at altitude and measuring crew exposure levels.
Capt. Gary Butler, Ph.D., Air Line Pilots Association, Aeromedical In-Flight Occupational Exposure Research will cover the topic of health threats from various environmental hazards.
Herbert Sauer, Ph.D. Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at University of Colorado and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (Guest Worker) will speak on solar flares, their occurrence, detection and effect on crew radiation exposure levels.
Don Hudson, M.D., Aviation Medical Advisory Services will be discussing aircrew health issues and the in-flight environment.
Pekka Oksanen, M.D., Finnair Medical Department and David Flower, M.D., British Air Medical Department will be speaking on how their respective airlines are handling the new regulations for air crew exposure to cosmic radiation.
