MHF Logistical Solutions in $13 Million New Jersey Clean Up

EPA Saving Taxpayer Dollars & Minimizing Neighborhood Inconvenience by Using Company's Gondola Railcars Instead of Trucks for Superfund Project in Edison, N.J.

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, Oct. 24 -/E-Wire/-- MHF Logistical Solutions, Inc. (MHF-LS), transportation logistics and packaging specialists, said today that it has begun work on a $13 million project to transport 314,000 tons of soil from a former Edison, New Jersey, chemical manufacturing facility to licensed disposal sites in Ohio and Michigan.

The project is part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Superfund clean-up program. EPA is using the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as its construction manager for this project which will run through the spring of 2005.

MHF-LS, which won its assignment through competitive bidding with other transportation, logistics and waste disposal companies, is acting as a subcontractor to Conti Environmental Inc., the project's general contractor for excavation, transportation and off-site disposal. MHF-LS is also providing services for two other companies which are handling treatment and disposal services for the hazardous waste portion of the project.

The general contractor is excavating, stockpiling, sampling and categorizing the contaminated soils as either a hazardous waste or a non-hazardous waste. The excavated soil will be shipped off site for disposal in an approved hazardous waste or non-hazardous waste landfill, depending upon the contaminant levels. The soils are loaded directly into private gondola railcars owned by MHF-LS. Each railcar is equipped with a Super Load Wrapper, which acts as a liner and tarp for the railcar shipments.

The railcars are then shipped to the designated sites in Ohio and Michigan.

"Using our own fleet of high-capacity gondola railcars and our packaging materials saves taxpayer money because of the reduced cost compared to truck transportation. The neighborhood surrounding the excavation site is also benefiting by not having an estimated 15,700 truck loads traveling its streets," said John Evanko, MHF-LS president, CEO and founder.

The Superfund site is a 5.5 acre property located in the Township of Edison, Middlesex County, New Jersey. From 1954 through 1970, it was owned by a chemical company that formulated and possibly manufactured insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides and herbicides. These formulating activities, along with poor housekeeping, led to widespread chemical contamination at the site. Site investigations began in 1983, and the site was placed on the National Priorities List (NPL) in August 1990 by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
