FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Ford Motor Company and National Geographic Name Christina Figueres "Hero of the Planet"

Figueres calls for a National Town Hall Meeting on Climate Change

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, WASHINGTON, Mar. 16 -/E-Wire/-- Signaling the importance of private and public partnerships to address global climate change, the Ford Motor Company and the National Geographic have selected Christiana Figueres, Executive Director of the Center for Sustainable Development in the Americas (CSDA), as "Hero of the Planet." In a full page acknowledgment in the March edition of National Geographic, Ms. Figueres was honored for her dedication to "a global energy revolution" (available on website: [REDACTED-EMAIL]).

CSDA, the organization Ms. Figueres founded, is the only nonprofit organization fully devoted to promoting climate change mitigation in Latin America and the Caribbean through innovative financial mechanisms that can mitigate climate change and advance sustainable development. CSDA works to engage the private sector and governments in mitigation projects. "The Ford Motor Company is to be commended for its leadership", Ms. Figueres said. "Together with other corporations, Ford is incorporating climate mitigation into its business strategy because it gives them a competitive advantage and because it will increasingly have an impact on shareholder value," Ms. Figueres said.

CSDA noted how ironic it is that just at the time when visionary companies like Ford are making their commitments to reduce carbon emissions, President Bush backslides on his commitment to regulate carbon dioxide as a pollutant.

Asked about President Bush's recent announcement she noted: "Bush's letter indicates he thinks there is a vacuum of general opinion on climate change. He is only listening to the lobbyists of a particular sector. This has got to change! We need a National Town Hall on climate to organize the voices of American citizens who do believe the world's expert scientists, who do care about severe weather and who do care about the future health of the planet for their kids' sake. The White House and congressional leaders need to start listening to all Americans."
