ENVIRON expands Health Sciences Institute through acquisition of Applied Epidemiology, Inc., and association of Karel de Raat and Henk Verhaar in Zeist, The Netherlands.

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA, Dec. 4 -/E-Wire/-- Joseph H. Highland, Ph.D., Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of ENVIRON Holdings, Inc. (ENVIRON), is pleased to announce the firm's recent acquisition of substantially all the assets of Amherst, Massachusetts-based Applied Epidemiology, Inc. (AEI). As a part of this transaction, AEI founder and President Kenneth Mundt joined ENVIRON as a Principal of the ENVIRON Health Sciences Institute (EHSI). AEI has roughly $1.2 million in revenues and 15 staff members providing a full range of epidemiological research and consulting services to both private industry and governmental organizations.

In related news, the firm is pleased to announce that EHSI has strengthened its European presence through the association of Karel de Raat and Henk Verhaar, who have joined as Principals to direct new operations in Zeist, The Netherlands. The Dutch practitioners offer services to chemical industry and governmental organizations in the areas of toxicology and ecotoxicology; environmental, occupational, and dietary exposure assessment; human health and environmental risk assessment; regulatory affairs; and dossier preparation.

Annette Shipp, Managing Principal of EHSI, says, "These exciting developments complement and expand The Institute's wide-ranging and technically sophisticated Health Sciences practice."

Dr. Kenneth Mundt brings to EHSI over 20 years of training and experience in the application of epidemiological concepts and methods to a wide range of occupational and environmental health challenges. After completing an M.S. in Epidemiology at the University of Massachusetts and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina, Mundt served for ten years on the faculty of the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Massachusetts, where he directed the Occupational Epidemiology Unit. More recently he established and expanded the research and consulting firm of Applied Epidemiology, Inc., to its present size. Today, in addition to heading the Applied Epidemiology practice at EHSI, Mundt holds adjunct faculty posts at The University of North Carolina and at Georgetown University, remains active in the American College of Epidemiology, and serves as an editor for two scientific journals.

A human toxicologist specializing in risk assessment, Dr. Karel de Raat's professional career began with twelve years' research on the occurrence and identity of toxic substances, among them carcinogens and mutagens, in the human environment. He was subsequently involved for more than twelve years in hazard and risk assessment of chemical products such as biocides, plant protection products, and food additives. He has written criteria documents used for the establishment of occupational exposure limits and managed various toxicological research projects and risk assessment projects for industrial and governmental clients. Before joining ENVIRON, Karel headed a group of consultants involved in regulatory toxicology. He studied biology at the Free University of Amsterdam, where he wrote a Ph.D. thesis on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and mutagens in ambient airborne particles.

Dr. Henk Verhaar is a chemist who specializes in environmental fate and ecotoxicology modeling. He has extensive knowledge in the fields of quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) and kinetic modeling, including physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling. After a long and fruitful association with Utrecht University, during which he spent a sabbatical at Colorado State University as a visiting assistant professor, in 1998 he entered the consultancy business, successfully offering his skills to the chemical industry and governmental and non-commercial research institutes. He holds a Ph.D. in predictive aquatic toxicology.
