MHF Logistical Solutions to Unveil New Shielded Type-A Container System for Radioactive Materials

At Tucson Convention, Company Also Will Highlight Safety & Cost Efficiency Advantages of Rail Transportation for Radioactive Materials

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, Feb. 23 -/E-Wire/-- MHF Logistical Solutions Inc. (MHF-LS), transportation and materials handling specialists serving the nuclear industry and others, is set to unveil its new Shielded Multi-Use Type- A Container Transport System at the upcoming Waste Management Symposium ( www.wmsym.org ), to be held in Tucson, Arizona, February 29 - March 4. * (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20030505/PHM061LOGO )

MHF-LS' new container system is designed to transport radioactive materials that require shielding for regulatory compliance. Because the top- loading, lead-lined container fits on trucks and also can be transported securely on rail cars, the new container system may be used as part of a seamless intermodal shipping process, from point of origin to final disposal site. The container may be loaded and unloaded using existing methods and equipment in place at nuclear facilities.

As part of its private fleet of transportation equipment, MHF-LS offers high-capacity articulated flat railcars that can each transport four of the Shielded Multi-Use Type-A Containers.

The container, designed by and built for MHF-LS, is certified for use in North America and internationally.

"Our new container system is an important development in the nuclear and waste management fields," said Gene Gleason, MHF-LS nuclear program manager. "By making it easier to adopt intermodal shipping, we can help customers harness the many advantages of rail transport even if their facility is not served by rail. That can mean substantial cost savings."

Gleason noted that the new container system also is a boost to public safety. "Intermodal truck-to-rail shipping helps avoid having to move materials on roads through populated areas," he said. "In this age of heightened concern about safety and security, that is a major factor for the industry."

Also slated for the Tucson conference is a panel discussion, to be chaired by Gleason, that will delve into various aspects of utilizing rail transportation for radioactive waste. Participants will present case studies involving the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Ohio, the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, and the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, among others.

"The annual Waste Management Symposium is a key event for us," said Gleason. "We're delighted that it will be the venue to unveil our new container system and to offer an in-depth discussion of how rail transportation can a superior choice for the nuclear industry."

More than 2,000 scientists, engineers, government officials, academic leaders, and corporate managers are expected to attend the Waste Management Symposium. Approximately 68 Technical Sessions and 600 technical papers and several workshops are scheduled over the four-day event. Topics will include research, development, and operational experience in nuclear waste, mixed waste, hazardous waste, mill tailings, environmental remediation, waste management and decommissioning.
