TO BUSINESS AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDITORS:

ALLENBY NAMED FIRST BATTEN INSTITUTE FELLOW

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, Mar. 20 -/E-Wire/-- Dr. Braden R. Allenby, AT&T; Environment, Health and Safety Vice President, has been appointed by the Batten Institute at the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration as its first fellow.

While in residence at Darden, Allenby's research focus will be on social and environmental dimensions of e-commerce; the use of Internet technology to better understand such sustainable business objectives as industrial ecology; environmentally-friendly design and life cycle assessment; and collaboration between the University's Schools of Law, Engineering, Environmental Sciences and Darden in earth systems engineering, policy and management issues.

Allenby also will lead an analysis of how the rapid changes in international corporate governance will affect the private sector. He will teach part-time at both Darden and the University's Engineering School.

The Executive Director of the Batten Institute, Dr. Robert F. Bruner, said Allenby will bring unique perspective and experience to the Batten mission to "foster pioneering thought and practice for creating, leading and transforming business enterprise."

"This appointment suggests the breadth of intellectual activity that the Batten Fellows Program brings to the significant challenges of today's global marketplace, including that of operating environmentally sustainable businesses," Bruner added.

"I'm very honored to be the first Batten Fellow," Allenby said. "My work as a Fellow will tie into AT&T;'s interests and initiatives, such as exploring the environmental and social implications of new communications technologies -including e-commerce -- and the effects of business models that rely more heavily on virtual-office and telework arrangements."

The Batten Institute was established in 2000 with an endowment exceeding $84 million. It conducts forward edge research and a wide range of programs to find solutions to such substantial business issues as sustainability, the management of innovation, e-business, strategic alliances, post-merger integration and building diverse senior executive teams.

Darden's faculty recently was ranked as the best in the world in separate surveys of graduating MBA students and corporate executives. It has the highest ranking for designing executive education programs for corporations among all graduate business schools, according to Business Week.

Allenby holds degrees from Yale University, the University of Virginia and Rutgers University. His diverse background includes public sector work as an attorney for the Civil Aeronautics Board and the Federal Communications Commission, as well as regulatory and environmental legal work in AT&T; Law and Government Affairs. Currently, he serves as a member of the Environmental Law Institute Board of Directors, and several other environmental, industry and editorial boards.
