Cyanotech Begins Second Clinical Trial for BioAstin: Sports Nutrition Supplement for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness
KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII, Mar. 21 -/E-Wire/-- Cyanotech Corporation(Nasdaq:CYAN), the world leader in producing high-value, natural products from microalgae, announced the start of a second clinical trial for BioAstin(TM) to measure its effectiveness in reducing delayed onset muscle soreness. This study is being conducted with 20 patients by Lead Investigator Andrew C. Fry, Ph.D., at the Human Performance Laboratories, The University of Memphis, in Memphis, Tennessee.
The phenomenon of muscular soreness is problematic for persons participating in intense physical activity. In athletes, activities such as strength training and long distance running can result in excessive muscular soreness that can interfere with the long term training program. Similar soreness is evident among persons exercising for general fitness purposes, as well as persons in therapeutic and rehabilitative exercise programs. Muscle soreness also is evident at the work site for persons in jobs requiring high levels of stressful physical activity.
"With a growing body of science supporting the use of antioxidants in sports nutrition, we are especially excited about the opportunities for BioAstin in this $1.5-billion category,' said Gerald R. Cysewski, Ph.D., chairman, president and CEO. "Evaluations of the antioxidant strength of key components in BioAstin indicate it has up to 500 times the strength of vitamin E and 10 times that of beta carotene.'
Astaxanthin, the antioxidant carotenoid in BioAstin, has been shown through in vitro studies to have membrane stabilizing properties, as well as the ability to modify immune responses to physical insults from intense physical activity. To date, Cyanotech has filed four U.S. patent applications for BioAstin based on the protective properties of astaxanthin.
Cyanotech Corporation, the world's leader in microalgae technology, produces high-value natural products from microalgae, and is the world's largest commercial producer of natural astaxanthin (pronounced "asta-zan-thin') from microalgae. Products include BioAstin(TM) natural astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant with expanding applications as a human nutraceutical; NatuRose® natural astaxanthin for the aquaculture and animal feed industry; Spirulina Pacifica®, a nutrient-rich dietary supplement; and phycobiliproteins, which are fluorescent pigments used in the immunological diagnostics market. Spirulina Pacifica and BioAstin are sold directly online through www.nutrex-hawaii.com and through resellers worldwide. Corporate and product information is available at www.cyanotech.com.
