Business and Environmental Leaders Gather in Manhattan to Mark Watershed Growth of Sustainable Forestry

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, May. 19 -/E-Wire/-- WHAT? Today Reuters reported a coalition of environmental groups launched a campaign to save Canada's vast boreal forests by insisting timber forests be certified for sustainable practices under the rigorous standards of the Forest Stewardship Council, and asking 500 consumers products companies and retailers to buy only wood, pulp, and paper from FSC-certified logging operations (see [http://www.enn.com/news/2004-05-19/s_24030.asp] http://www.enn.com/news/2004-05-19/s_24030.asp).

Tonight, business and environmental leaders from around the world who helped create and promote FSC certification meet in New York for a Rainforest Alliance sustainable forestry event marking the rapid recent growth of FSC certification. Over 32 million acres of forest -- about the size of Alabama, or five Vermonts -- and over 1000 operations in over 50 countries are now certified under the Rainforest Alliance's SmartWood program, and major new certification announcements are expected tonight.

SmartWood inspects and certifies forestry, pulp, paper, and wood products operations for FSC compliance. SmartWood certified-sustainable products are carried by mainstream outlets such as IKEA, Home Depot and FedEx-Kinko's. How will the trend impact your audience? Ask the experts:
