FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Colleges and Universities Get ENSR's "Crash Course" in Environmental Compliance

MASSACHUSETTS, WESTFORD, Mar. 23 -/E-Wire/-- In the past year, ENSR International, a leading environmental consulting firm, provided environmental services to 60 college and university campuses seeking assistance with their environmental programs. Improvements to waste management, air and water quality, site planning, and other environmental programs were achieved by major public universities and smaller private colleges, including 30 institutions in the northeast, 15 in the south, and 7 in the mid-west.

Colleges and universities nationwide are working to improve their environmental performance, in response to EPA's initiative to bring colleges and universities into compliance with federal environmental laws. EPA's campaign includes a targeted enforcement sweep of campuses in four EPA regions, with fines as much as $1.7 million for non-compliance. During the past few years, institutions in nearly every part of the country have been fined.

A specialized team of ENSR professionals was formed to help college and university clients conduct environmental compliance audits, properly manage their chemical wastes, obtain air permits, and implement other program improvements. Additionally, ENSR is working with these institutions to develop environmental management systems (EMS) that provide the management infrastructure and support systems to help ensure that the colleges and universities stay in compliance on an on-going basis.

"Colleges and universities have numerous environmental issues, ranging from utility department air permits and fuel tank management programs to the complex issue of managing chemical waste in research and teaching laboratories," said Lee Davis, Director of ENSR's Colleges and Universities Initiative. "The organizational structure of most colleges and universities present a challenge to effective environmental programs, which cross the boundaries of the school's academic and administrative functions. ENSR's team of environmental professionals has experience working with colleges and universities, so we understand our clients' needs as well as the technical issues. As a result, ENSR delivers customized, effective solutions to our growing number of college and university clients."

As part of the Colleges and Universities Initiative, ENSR has launched a series of "FYI" flyers that will focus on common environmental issues facing campuses nationwide. To obtain a copy of ENSR's "Chemical Waste Handling FYI" and to be placed on our list for future FYI updates, please call 1-[REDACTED-PHONE] or email [REDACTED-EMAIL].
