Event Announcement: 6th International Wildlife Law Conference

CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO, Mar. 23 -/E-Wire/-- The 6th International Wildlife Law Conference will be held in Washington, DC on March 31, 2001. The theme for this year's conference is "The Seas and International Law." The conference, chaired by William C. G. Burns with the American Society of International Law - Wildlife Interest Group, is organized as a day-long series of panel discussions.

Panel 1 will be chaired by Howard S. Schiffman, Adjunct Assistant Professor, New York University, and will address selected issues pertaining to International Law of the Sea and Marine Wildlife Protection. These issues and their presenters are: Professor Patricia Birnie,UNCLOS and the Conservation of Biological Diversity: Summoning Spirits from the Vasty Deeps; Dr. Montserrat Gorina-Ysern, Marine Scientific Research and Whaling Research; and Howard S. Schiffman, UNCLOS and Marine Wildlife Disputes: A Big Splash or Barely a Ripple?

Dr. Paul Arthur Berkman will present a discussion on the Focus on Wildlife Research Technologies รขย€ย“ Antarctic Treaty Searchable Database 1959-1999.

Panel 2 will be chaired by William P. Weiner, Professor of Law, Thomas M. Cooley Law School, and will address the Effectiveness of International Fisheries Regimes. These issues and their presenters are: Beth Clark, The Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources: Problems and Prospects; Daniel Owen, Measures Taken by Regional Fisheries Regimes Against Illegal Unreported and Unregulated Fishing Operations; Glenn Wiser, Transparency in 21st Century International Fisheries Management; and David Freestone, The Role of Precaution in Sustainable Fisheries Management.

Panel 3 will be chaired by Jack Frazier, Conservation and Research Center, Smithsonian Institution and will address Implementation and Compliance with Sea Turtle Conventions and Agreements. These issues and their presenters are: Jack Frazier, The Perils Facing Sea Turtles: An Overview; Charlotte de Fontaubert & Tim Bagley, Sea Turtle Conservation in the Western Hemisphere and Indian Ocean: an NGO Perspective; David A. Balton, Unilateral and Multilateral Approaches to Protecting Sea Turtles.

Todd Sigaty, President of Village Focus International, will be the luncheon speaker, and he will address Recent Developments in Wildlife Law and Policy in Indochina - Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam with a brief look at national legislation and CITES implementation in ASEAN countries.
