MHF Logistical Solutions Completes Design, Fabrication & Installation of Packaging System for Silo 3 Waste Stream at DOE'S FERNALD Closure Project in Ohio
"Integrated Existing Technologies to Create Customized System"
PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, Oct. 7 -/E-Wire/-- MHF Logistical Solutions, Inc. (MHF-LS) â transportation and packaging specialists for a range of hazardous and non-hazardous materials â said today that is has completed the design, fabrication and installation of a customized mechanical loading and packaging system to be used at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Fernald Closure Project.
The Fernald Closure Project is a 1,050-acre site about 18 miles northwest of Cincinnati, OH. The site had been home to a government-owned facility that operated from 1952 to 1989, processing more than 500 million pounds of high-purity uranium metal products used for national defense purposes. Since 1992, the site has been a designated Superfund site, with DOE and its prime contractor, Fluor Fernald, working to clean up and close the site.
MHF-LS was contracted by Fluor Fernald to build a system to package approximately 135,000 cubic feet of hazardous cold metal oxides (including arsenic, cadmium, chromium, selenium and thorium-230, a byproduct of uranium decay) from inside the site's Silo 3. The dry, powder-like residues must be moved and packaged securely, without contact to workers and the surrounding environment.
In developing its customized solution, MHF-LS harnessed existing loading and packaging technologies not previously utilized in similar situations. A sophisticated conveyor system and bulk packaging system was developed to load the materials directly into the MHF-LS patented Lift Liner⢠packaging. The loading process is operated by an electronic control system adapted by MHF-LS, which also supplied software and training for the Fernald staff.
The project will create about 2,000 packages.
The packaging to be used is composed of double-layered polypropylene composite materials with 30-mil PVC liner. It has been tested to IP-2 requirements in accordance with U.S. Department of Transportation regulations, and is manufactured by MHF Packaging Solutions, a unit of MHF-LS.
Once loaded, each package will hold about 5,000 pounds of the hazardous materials and will be ready for safe transportation to a final disposition facility. The inner packaging is sealed through radio frequency bonding, a more secure technique than standard bonding.
"We've been impressed with the expertise and innovation that the MHF-LS team brought to this project," said Doris Edwards, Silo 3 project manager. "They integrated existing technologies to create a customized solution that meets our precise needs here in Fernald. And, they did it on time and on budget."
Said John Evanko, MHF-LS president and CEO, "Our mission is to help our customers in government and industry accomplish their transportation and packaging projects. The Fernald assignment is a great example of how our innovation and creativity can make a real difference. In the end, we all come out ahead when sites such as Fernald can be cleaned up successfully and we're delighted to have played our part."
