ARCADIS Investigates Saftey of One of Europe's Longest Tunnels
EUROPE, Dec. 6 -/E-Wire/Business Wire/-- ARCADIS (NASDAQ: ARCAF, EURONEXT: ARCAD), the international consulting and engineering company, today said its consortium has won a contract to perform extensive safety surveys on a new railway line between France and Italy. The line, from Lyon to Turin, will include two tunnels. One of the tunnels, which will be 53 kilometers long, will be one of the longest in Europe. The railway line will be used for passenger transport, including high-speed rail travel, and for freight transportation. The latter will also include the transportation of dangerous goods and trucks. The survey will be finalized in May 2005. The total contract value for the consortium is EUR 2 million. The other consortium partners are Metropolitane Milanese (Italy), Scetauroute (France) and Semaly (France).
ARCADIS will study the possible effects of an accident inside the tunnel with dangerous goods including toxic gases or flammable liquids. ARCADIS will also help determine whether the planned safety measures inside and around the tunnels are sufficient to mitigate the effects of such events, including conducting extensive meetings with local aid organizations. Based on the study the necessary measures will be taken to reduce the transportation risks and optimize passenger safety.
"This contract is a fine recognition of the combined forces of our experts from The Netherlands and France," says Michel Jaski, member of the executive board of ARCADIS. "The railway line between France and Italy is an important link in the pan-European rail network. Due to its multipurpose transportation needs, safety is of the utmost importance."
