TO ENVIRONMENTAL EDITORS:
Institute of Forest Biotechnology Announces Vandalism
NORTH CAROLINA, RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, Mar. 27 -/E-Wire/-- The Institute of Forest Biotechnology today announced the following:
RELEASE: Statement of Response and Concern
(Reference: "Vandals attack forestry research project" March 23, 2001 Oregon State University press release by David Stauth, Corvallis, Oregon. www.orst.edu)
Recent activities directed to Oregon State University yield strong response by an Institute committed to engagement instead of terrorism
Application of biotechnology to trees and forests raises substantial societal, economic, and environmental issues. This is not surprising, for trees are enormously important to humans and are required for life on this planet. Many of these issues are new, for the science is new; many require data and experience to be gained carefully over time. All of the issues are complicated, requiring informed and open engagement among the widely varied parties worldwide with forest biotechnology interests, concerns, or activities.
The Institute of Forest Biotechnology directly supports such discussion as well as sound research on the societal and environmental issues attendant to forest biotechnology. The Institute strongly deplores vandalism and terrorism. Nocturnal choppings and anonymous emails do not constitute good strategy or societal responsibility, and will not usefully resolve the issues at hand. The Institute works instead for purposeful and decent interaction among all parties as the better strategy to address issues and diverse points of view.
Institute of Forest Biotechnology The Institute of Forest Biotechnology works for societal, ecological, and economic benefits from forest biotechnology worldwide. Recently established in Research Triangle Park, NC, it is a private non-profit corporation initially positioned at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. The Institute was in 2000 catalyzed and shaped by national representatives of the academic, industrial, policy and public interest communities sharing a common premise: the unfolding of forest biotechnology requires new approaches, strong early attention to varied issues, and functional partnership among diverse parties.
