FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Staples is Target of Urban Uprising for Forest Protection

100 Demonstrations at STAPLES' Stores Nationwide Protest Policy of Forest Devastation

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, Mar. 28 -/E-Wire/-- The second National Day of Action against Staples was a huge success as protests raged at 100 Staples' stores across the US. Leading forest protection organizations and thousands of concerned citizens protested the company's refusal to help preserve the world's forests by switching to the sale of recycled paper in its stores. Hundreds faxed in letters to the CEO from the www.ForestEthics.org/staples web site.

"This campaign against Staples is turning into a national uprising and it won't stop until Staples stops destroying forests," said Todd Paglia with ForestEthics. "This is not a problem without a solution - alternatives like recycled paper are readily available and over 400 companies have already made a commitment to the forests. Staples is an ecological terrorist intent on lining its already overstuffed pockets by destroying our forests," said Paglia.

"Home improvement companies like Lowes and Home Depot have made a commitment to the forest a part of their business plans, but Staples continues to shortchange its customers' quality of life by destroying forests," said Danna Smith of the Dogwood Alliance. "I can't imagine a lower value use of our beautiful southern forests than to have them clearcut to make Staples' disposable paper products," said Smith. Other forests, like our national forests and the old growth forests in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia, are also threatened by Staples insatiable appetite for wood and paper products. Companies like Staples are funding this destruction by refusing to use recycled and alternative tree-free fibers.

The Paper Campaign was launched on November 15, 2000, America Recycles Day, with over 75 protests at Staples stores across the US. The demands are as follows: · Immediately phase out all wood and paper products made from old growth fiber. · Immediately phase out all wood and paper products made from fiber from US public lands. · Commit to achieving 50% post consumer content for all paper products within two years and begin an immediate phase out of all products that are made of 100% virgin wood fiber. · Make available 100% post consumer paper and paper that is made from agricultural fiber by designating and stocking permanent shelf space all stores and other points of sale. · Educate all employees, customers and suppliers on the benefits of recycled paper, recycling, alternative fibers, and healthy forest resources.
