Erosion Control Industry Embraces New River Restoration Tool
LIVINGSTON, MONTANA, Mar. 3 -/E-Wire/-- Muddy water can mean hot water for those working in and around streams and rivers. A new tool, built to enable rapid, accurate river and stream reconnaissance, inventory, assessment, and monitoring, debuted to enthusiastic reviews at the world's most popular soil and water event held recently in Dallas.
RiverWorks Rapid Assessment System™ (RRAS™) is breakthrough technology that combines a waterproof, rugged, handheld computer, digital camera and GPS receiver with a software package for the efficient, collection, analysis, reporting and sharing of scientifically-valid stream data. Developed and tested in environments as diverse as the Yellowstone River and the Mississippi Delta by THI RiverWorks, Inc. of Livingston, Mont., RRAS™ is currently in use by governments, non-profits, private industry and universities.
RRAS™ was showcased to more than 2,000 erosion control professionals from around the world at the International Erosion Control Association's (IECA) Environmental Connection 2005 (EC05), Feb. 20 - 23, 2005, in Dallas.
"The enthusiastic reception of RRAS™ comes at a time of unprecedented growth for the ecological restoration industry," says RiverWorks CEO Michael Sprague. "This $9.6 billion industry is poised to make great strides by leveraging the latest and best tools and technologies to tackle complex problems such as sediment control, water quality monitoring, and restoration planning and design."
Sprague, who sits on the technical committee for IECA and served this year as an IECA stream restoration course instructor, works tirelessly to advance the river restoration industry. Not only does his firm focus on the development of new tools and technologies, but Sprague also generously shares his knowledge and experiences through workshops, meetings and events each year.
RiverWorks developed RRAS™ out of an identified need for a repeatable, efficient way to generate scientifically-sound, defensible ecological data. With offices overlooking the magnificent Yellowstone River, RiverWorks is a small firm that thinks as big as its Paradise Valley vista. The company's aggressive investment in technologies to assist the protection and restoration of rivers and streams dovetails perfectly with the growing opportunities for professionals entering the burgeoning ecological restoration market.
"Every emerging industry follows essentially the same path," says Sprague. "In the early stages everyone does their own thing in their own way, and slowly standards begin to develop based on identified needs and findings. RRAS™ is designed to be a flexible tool to advance with the industry as it develops a more standardized way of collecting and sharing stream data."
During its official product launch RiverWorks is offering incentives including discounts, nonprofit programs and free training workshops. For more information visit RiverWorks' website at www.riverworks.net or call toll-free [REDACTED-PHONE].
