2005 Goldman Environmental Prize Winners to Be Announced Live in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, Apr. 11 -/E-Wire/Business Wire/-- What: The Goldman Environmental Prize, the world's largest prize program honoring grassroots environmentalists, will announce the six recipients of the 2005 Prize at a San Francisco press conference.

Background: -- The Goldman Environmental Prize is awarded annually to six environmental heroes for sustained and significant efforts to preserve the natural environment.
-- Goldman Environmental Prize winners are literal and figurative "voices in the wilderness," men and women from isolated villages and inner cities who are willing to take great personal risks to safeguard the environment.
-- Areas for award include, but not limited to: protecting endangered ecosystems and species, combating destructive development projects, promoting sustainability, influencing environmental policies and striving for environmental justice. Each winner receives a $125,000 award.
-- 1991 Goldman Environmental Prize winner, Wangari Maathai, received the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize for her diligent work and continued dedication to the environment of Kenya and its people. Maathai is the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
