Wildlife Trust Named "Best Wildlife Charity"

May 2005 issue presents "America's 100 Best"

PALISADES, NEW YORK, Apr. 20 -/E-Wire/-- Wildlife Trust was named "Best Wildlife Charity "by Reader's Digest, as part of its 2005"America's 100 Best" annual awards issue. Wildlife Trust was selected, in part, for its Edge of the Sea program, an aquatic conservation program. Reader's Digest wrote, "is testing new boat designs that may reduce manatee deaths and injuries from collisions."

The Edge of the Sea program is based in St. Petersburg, Florida, with active projects in Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela and the United States. It focuses on the conservation of threatened species living in coastal and near shore areas, especially estuaries, mangroves and sea grass habitats, including manatees, dolphins, right whales and sea turtles.

Dr. Mary Pearl, Wildlife Trust President, said of the award, "It's such an honor for Wildlife Trust to receive this award for our Edge of the Sea program, which, although founded only four brief years ago, is quickly making an impact in the field of conservation. At Wildlife Trust, we take pride in our reputation as conservation innovators through all our programs, whether at fragile coastlines or in the deep, tropical forests."

To compile the "America's 100 Best" list, the editors at Reader's Digest talked with experts and ordinary folks, and collected ideas from coast to coast. Then they tested, tasted and debated everything from the best BBQ sauce to the most charitable way to spend $1 million. The resulting feature is divided up into six categories: Legacies, Passions, Adventure, Innovation, Time Off and Connections.

"When you're talking to 41 million readers about what's 'best' in America, you can't wing it, and you can't be predictable," said Reader's Digest editor-in-chief Jackie Leo. "Our team of researchers, writers, reporters and editors scoured thousands of sources to come up with a surprising and delightful special issue." Wildlife Trust empowers local conservation scientists worldwide to protect nature and safeguard ecosystem and human health.
