Next-Generation Alternative Maritime Power Technology Underway at the Port

Infrastructure Construction for Direct Wharf Plug-In of Electric Power for Ships at Dock Begins

SAN PEDRO, CALIFORNIA, Apr. 22 -/E-Wire/Business Wire/-- Expanding the use of the world's first clean electrical power program for container ships at dock, the Port of Los Angeles is beginning construction on a direct wharf plug-in system at Berths 212-216. Considered the "next generation" of the Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) program, ships calling at these berths will not use a barge conduit for connecting ships to shore-side electrical power, like the system currently in use at Berth 100 in the Port. Ships will simply plug-in to an AMP outlet contained in the wharf itself.

Each containership plugged into the Port's AMP program saves one ton of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) from entering the L.A. Basin per day.

"This port shares my commitment to clean air, responsible operations and industry-leading technology," said Los Angeles Mayor Jim Hahn. "Less than one year after we opened the world's first alternative maritime power container terminal, we've improved the design of this environmental technology. I am pleased that our customers are building and retrofitting more ships with AMP capabilities."

"When we plugged in the first AMP ship in the world at the port a year ago, a new precedent was set at the Port of Los Angeles; and the addition of these new AMP berths is yet another step toward having a thriving economic engine at the port, while also cleaning up our air and upholding the Mayor's pledge of 'no net increase' in air pollution," said Councilwoman Janice Hahn.

"Each time we plug in a ship, we prevent the equivalent emissions as that generated by 16,000 truck trips from entering our air. We are making history at the port and the entire region will benefit," Councilwoman Hahn concluded.

Construction of an electrical utility service substation, supplied by the City's Department of Water and Power, electrical switchgear, underground and under-wharf conduit, cables and wharf-mounted flush AMP outlet vault are all needed to outfit the wharf with AMP. Construction will begin within the month and is expected to take six months to complete. Total cost is estimated at more than $1 million.
