CertainTeed's Mountaintop Plant Receives State Environmental Award

PENNSYLVANIA, MOUNTAINTOP, Mar. 30 -/E-Wire/-- CertainTeed Corporation's Mountaintop, PA manufacturing facility has been chosen for a Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The award, granted for the plant's recycling efforts, was presented by Governor Tom Ridge in Harrisburg.

CertainTeed entered in the large business (more than 100 employee category) for its industrial recycling program. Through its waste minimization efforts, the company recycled tons of various solid wastes and saved considerable money in 1999. In addition, its product batch mix included a large amount of recycled materials that year. By recycling dust, cullet and sludge, hundreds of thousands of dollars in landfill expenses were saved. And of the millions of gallons of water entering the plant in 1999, nothing was discharged as it was reused in varying amounts throughout the manufacturing process. Through this closed-loop process wash-water system, CertainTeed saved billions of gallons of city water consumption.

"We strive to be an outstanding environmental citizen, but it's not always an easy road as numerous operational programs all compete for our attention," explains Marsha Holt, plant manager. "It's great to be recognized for our efforts as we continue in our quest for our ultimate goal of Zero Discharge in all areas by 2003."

CertainTeed's entry was one of 93 applications received for a Governor's Award in Environmental Excellence. A total of 43 companies will receive awards.
