Legionnaires' disease under attack in New York
Copper silver ion generators become Legionella disinfectant of choice
Long term chemical free Legionella control technology for healthcare facilities and hotels growing in popularity and delivering on promises.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, Aug. 12 -/E-Wire/-- New York, NY รขยย Decades of research and hundreds of field applications in healthcare facilities around the world have shown that Legionella control using industrial size copper silver ion generators, (not to be confused with the smaller swimming pool technology), offers a reliable and more affordable long term solution than chlorine (Cl2), thermal eradication and even chlorine dioxide (ClO2).
Although the basic concept goes back many centuries, the modern version of this technology was introduced by NASA over 20 years ago. Since then, a Canadian manufacturing company that also specializes in infectious control and prevention protocols has engineered the latest industrial version of this water treatment technology.
As a water treatment solutions, industrial copper silver ion generators have shown to make domestic hot water system Legionella free within 30 days or less. where other technology protocols like chlorine or thermal eradication have failed. Methodology, standardized implementation and follow-up protocols are key to the success of this affordable technology.
Another interesting technology attempting to claim success in domestic hot water Legionella control is chlorine dioxide (ClO2). This technology has shown promising results in cold water treatment environments. Unfortunately research and field applications have both shown that this technology (ClO2) can take up to 17 months to deliver acceptable Legionella control in domestic hot water systems. Additionally, ClO2 must also be generated on-site using Sodium Chlorites (NaClO2) generating dangerous by-products within the water system called Chlorites or Chlorates.
As for industrial copper silver ionisation, it performs extremely well in all water temperatures and has proven to offer the longest systemic dwell time on the market without affecting odour or taste. The technology also has the ability to reach all distal points, low flow areas and dead legs with full biofilm penetration for maximum Legionella control efficacy.
As for acceptable water pH levels, the competition is quick to point out that copper silver ionisation has some limitations in alkaline water conditions. In fact, when pH values surpass 8.6, scientific research has shown that ionic copper (not the silver) will precipitate and thus loose its biocide properties against Legionella. This said, water treatment professionals who supply industrial copper silver ionisation technology fully understand this limitation normally associated to cooling tower environments and rare cases of domestic hot water loops. Solutions to monitor and control pH values when these conditions present themselves are affordable and readily available when required.
When all Legionella control water treatment technologies are compared, industrial copper silver ionisation is certainly growing in popularity and a serious contender when dealing with domestic hot water systems. Copper silver ionisation has shown in numerous scientific studies and countless installations in Canada, The United States and Europe to fully penetrate the biofilm and kill Legionella bacteria at the source.
Knowledge on all types of water treatment technologies will help copper silver ionisation continue to establish itself as a reputable, affordable and reliable technology for Legionella control and prevention.
Legionellosis, also known as Legionnaires' disease, is a preventable form of pneumonia that can develop when people at risk of the infection inhale micro droplets of Legionella contaminated water. These people include immunocompromised individuals, cancer treatment patients, anyone with a repertory condition, smokers and the elderly. As many as 90 percent of Legionnaires' cases go unreported, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those who contract the disease experience flu-like symptoms. Untreated, the disease proves fatal in 15 to 20 percent of the cases. Some of the locations most at risk of Legionella bacteria presence are healthcare facilities, hotels and other large buildings with recalculated domestic hot water loops and cooling towers.
