Nation's Recycling Professionals to Gather in Minneapolis August 28-31, 2005

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, Aug. 29 -/E-Wire/-- The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) will bring nearly 1,000 professionals in the recycling, waste prevention and resource conservation fields to downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota for its 24th Annual Congress & Exposition, August 28-31, 2005 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The Annual Congress & Expo is known as the premiere education and networking event for the nation's professional recycling community.

Here are some highlights from this year's schedule of events:

• NRC's Annual Awards will be presented on Tuesday and Wednesday to 11 of the best organizations and individuals in recycling today. Local winners include Anoka County Commissioner Jim Kordiak (Best Local Elected Recycling Leader) and the Recycling Association of Minnesota (Recycling Organization of the Year). NRC will also present on Tuesday $1,000 scholarships to students from Hamline University and the University of St. Thomas. (See separate press release in Congress & Expo press kit for details.)

• On Monday, legendary reporter Helen Thomas will share her insights from over 55 years of covering the White House. She will examine such questions as: How can the public and nonprofit organizations most effectively influence public policy in the halls of power? How can recycling advocates work with journalists to advance the debate?

• On Tuesday, Thomas P. Dunne, acting assistant administrator of the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C., will discuss EPA's role in creating stronger, more focused partnerships between the public and private sectors to advance recycling.

• Monday through Wednesday, attendees will have 30 educational sessions to choose from on hot topics such as increasing beverage container recycling, running successful curbside recycling programs, electronics recycling, recycling at colleges and universities, and zero waste.

• More than 80 exhibitors will show off their latest products and services, including products made with recycled materials, recycling equipment, educational and promotional materials, and more.

• The Minneapolis Convention Center will unveil its newly expanded recycling program completed in time to host the NRC Congress & Expo, during at press conference at 10:40 a.m. on Monday. (See separate press release in Congress & Expo press kit for details.)
