SCS Announces New 2005 Certifications under FSC Program at GreenBuild Show
Wide Range of Products Available for Green Building Applications
ATLANTA, ALABAMA, Nov. 8 -/E-Wire/-- 2005 has been another banner year for certification of forests and forest products under the rigorous standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), according to Scientific Certification Systems Inc. (SCS). The range of building products certified by SCS in 2005 alone includes: dimensional lumber, moulding, joinery, decking, flooring, indoor and outdoor furniture, fixtures, doors, stairs, windowframes, veneer, particleboard, fiberboard, chipboard, plywood and sheet goods.
SCS's Forest Conservation Program was established in the early 1990s to recognize outstanding forest management practices, pioneering third-party certification practices in the forest products industry. SCS was among the first group of certifiers to become accredited when the FSC program was launched, and has seen a steady growth in its certification business ever since.
"The number of companies seeking FSC certification for their products is growing every year, in response to increasing market demand, especially in the building sector, for products that meet sustainability standards," said Robert Hrubes, SCS senior vice president. "As architects, builders and consumers come to appreciate the irreplaceable value of our forest resources, and come to see that environmental stewardship and social responsibility go hand in hand, demand for certified products will continue to rise."
The list of companies certified in 2005 includes forest companies, manufacturers, wholesalers, brokers, distributors, traders, and retailers located throughout the US, as well as internationally.
Whiteman Lumber Company, a Cataldo, Idaho-based supplier of appearance grade timbers (Douglas-fir, western larch, Engelmann spruce, lodgepole pine, and grand fir), is one of the newest certified companies. "I am thoroughly pleased with my decision to become FSC certified," said Brad Corkill, President of Whiteman Lumber Co. "This has given me the opportunity to showcase the high grade timbers we provide for homes throughout the United States. The people at SCS have been very helpful in familiarizing me with the benefits of certification and also with making certain that my products are properly identified as certified."
A number of forest and forest product companies certified by SCS were represented at the GreenBuild 2005 conference. Among these companies, Collins Pine Company, part of The Collins Companies, was one of the very first companies to seek certification under FSC standards for its Collins Almanor Forest, which was issued its first certificate in 1993. Since that time, The Collins Companies have earned widespread acclaim for their certification efforts across all of their holdings, including a 1996 Presidential Award for Sustainable Development (www.collinswood.com).
Another exhibitor at GreenBuild is Panel Source International, of St. Albert, Canada, a remanufacturer and distributor of panel products. (www.panelsource.net). "Panel Source focuses exclusively on supplying FSC Certified Products for use in conjunction with the LEED⢠rating system, maintaining an extensive inventory of products for prompt shipment anywhere in North America." said James Mcleod, Project Manager of Panel Source. "Panel Source chose to work with SCS because of their reputation for professionalism and dedication, and we have been thoroughly impressed their knowledge and service."
