Big Sur International Marathon Goes Organic!
Organic Cotton T's to Be Given to All Race Participants
Commitment to Environment Weaves Partnership With
Earthbound Farm(R) and Patagonia
CALIFORNIA, CARMEL, Apr. 6 -/E-Wire/-- The Big Sur International Marathon is wearing its commitment to the environment on its collective sleeve this year, becoming the first major race in North America to distribute 100% organic cotton race T-shirts to participants. Approximately 12,000 athletes will receive the T-shirts, made possible due to the sponsorships of Earthbound Farm(R) and Patagonia.
The all-organic cotton shirts are produced by Beneficial T's, a division of outdoor clothing designer Patagonia, Inc. "By using organic cotton T-shirts for the Marathon, we're eliminating 4,000 pounds of synthetic chemicals that would have been used to produce conventional cotton shirts," said Lu Setnicka, Patagonia's Director of Public Affairs.
Earthbound Farm, the nation's largest grower and shipper of organic produce, has been a sponsor of the Marathon for several years, and initiated the concept of organic T-shirts for the Marathon as part of the company's commitment to make the organic choice viable. "It's important that people realize their buying decisions have an impact on their health, the health of their families, and the health of the environment. We are thrilled that we were able to help forge the organic partnership with Patagonia and the Marathon," said Myra Goodman, co-founder of Earthbound Farm.
The 100% organic cotton T-shirts will be distributed to participants in the Marathon, the Marathon Relay, the 21-mile PowerWalk, the 10.7-mile Walk, and the 5K Run, as well as to 2,000 event volunteers. Additionally, race participants, volunteers, and spectators will be eating donated Earthbound Farm organic produce at the finish line.
"By providing organic cotton T-shirts for the Marathon, we are following through on the commitment we have made to tread lightly on the earth while staging a world-class road race," said Race Director Wally Kastner.
The 16th annual Big Sur International Marathon is set for Sunday, April 29, at 7 a.m. All proceeds from the event will be distributed to nonprofit organizations in Big Sur and throughout Monterey County. Over the past 15 years, the Marathon Board of Directors has distributed nearly $800,000 to local charities. For more information, visit www.bsim.org, www.ebfarm.com, and www.beneficialts.com.
